How to Beat Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds

In the same vein as Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Wilds is carrying on the tradition of bringing back popular monsters from the past into the present day. Notably, one such monster that has recently made its comeback in the game has been highly anticipated by fans.

In the exciting world of Monster Hunter Wilds, the elusive Lagiacrus makes a much-anticipated return after a lengthy absence, last seen in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Both diehard fans and newcomers eager to take it down for the first time should be prepared for its updated combat style. Brace yourselves, as you might need to familiarize yourself with its environment to effectively hunt it. Here’s a guide on unlocking and defeating Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to Unlock Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds

To initiate the chase for Lagiacrus monsters, you need to reach Hunter Rank 31 first. Once you’re there, speak with Erik at the Scarlet Forest base camp to kick off a sequential mission leading to capturing a High-Rank Lagiacrus. Upon successful completion, an optional quest for hunting regular Lagiacrus will become accessible. This optional quest can pop up in the Scarlet Forest, either as a standard or Tempered version. When you spot it roaming freely in the open world, you can engage immediately or mark it as an investigation to pursue at a later time.

How to Beat Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds

In earlier Monster Hunter games, Lagiacrus is a well-known leviathan, so experienced hunters may recognize certain moves. Its weaker attacks include rapid bites along a straight line, tail whips, small bolts of electricity, and a charge that utilizes its elongated body. When wielding weapons with perfect guards, evasive maneuvers, or parries, these actions can be exploited effectively. Additionally, offset attacks are beneficial as they allow you to gain the upper hand before Lagiacrus unleashes its larger moves, which can significantly impact a hunt’s outcome.

When Lagiacrus gets angry, it escalates its lightning attacks more frequently. Its primary moves include a swift slide and a powerful lightning burst which can cause heavy damage if not handled cautiously. The slide move propels the Lagiacrus forward, knocking down anything in its path. The frequency of this attack depends on the rage level of the Lagiacrus. In some cases, the slide may end with a smaller lightning burst that inflicts damage within its impact radius. Of all its moves, the lightning bursts are the most dangerous. During combat, Lagiacrus tends to move erratically, but it pauses before performing a burst attack and curls up to discharge energy. It can unleash a smaller-scale burst that harms targets close to it and a larger one that generates three waves of electricity emanating from its body, each wave striking different locations from a wider range.

To fend off the sneaky attacks from Lagiacrus, your top choices are either to swiftly move out of harm’s way or employ a well-timed dodge with weapons such as Dual Blades or Bow. The perfect guard moves can be helpful if Lagiacrus performs a slithering attack only once, but will still put you in a precarious position if it decides to return the favor. The same goes for offset attacks, unless you’re able to initiate a power clash, which isn’t always feasible. Laying traps in the attack’s path can be an effective method to halt Lagiacrus’ advance and provide an excellent opportunity for counterattack.

In dealing with eruption attacks, it is advisable to maintain a safe distance and wait for the harm sequence to pass. The perfect guard may help avoid initial damage, but it can leave you in a weakened staggered guard state that can drain your stamina meter rapidly and still cause damage as subsequent lightning strikes connect. The safest approach against these attacks is to wait for them to conclude before striking back, as there’s typically a good window where Lagiacrus will recover before launching another attack. Notably, after the larger eruption attack, Lagiacrus will have a temporary wound on its back that you can exploit with a Focus Strike to inflict even more damage and potentially create a larger damage opportunity.

Underwater

In the same vein as its debut in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Lagiacrus features an underwater battle sequence in Monster Hunter Wilds. This combat mode strips your weapon of any attributes, forcing you to concentrate on evading attacks while submerged and interacting with the aquatic environment to harm Lagiacrus. When underwater, you can dodge attacks and swim up or down. By holding the left trigger on Xbox or L2 on PlayStation, you can swim at different depths freely. This method of movement is optimal as it keeps you alert for any movements from Lagiacrus and provides greater mobility.

In this part, you’ll find two rock formations that you can make fall on Lagiacrus. The first one can topple over as soon as you enter the water, provided you act swiftly. This will cause Lagiacrus to become stunned. The second one is located behind where you initially entered, in the corner.

Players can utilize their grappling tool to latch onto the monster, much like they would secure a bandage over an injury. Once attached, you have the option to perform quick strikes with your knife or execute a more powerful attack that requires time but deals greater damage using any weapon. Wounds inflicted underwater are still applicable, so securing yourself to Lagiacrus whenever possible can stun it at any moment. Interestingly, the monster will also develop a temporary wound following its projectile assault, just as it does on land.

Should you inflict sufficient harm to Lagiacrus while submerged, the one who delivers the decisive strike will enter an animated sequence, launching a final assault on the monster. If this happens on the left side of the underwater region, it will thrust the monster into a spiky structure, causing additional damage and leaving it stunned and vulnerable to further attacks. Performing this animated sequence elsewhere underwater will only deal initial damage and send Lagiacrus back to the surface. Failure to inflict enough damage on Lagiacrus could trigger a massive supernova attack, which might even harm players outside the water. In such cases, maintain a safe distance from Lagiacrus, even if it means diving deeper into the water. Avoid resurfacing until the attack concludes.
