I don’t watch TV shows as mindlessly as I used to, but I’ll seize any opportunity to revisit the darkly comic horror of Yellowjackets. In fact, it’s Netflix that offers this escape, with Season 2 now available on their streaming platform. However, amidst the excitement, I find myself puzzled once again about Crystal’s final destination.
Or, in a more colloquial style:
I don’t zone out to TV shows like I used to, but I can’t resist diving back into the darkly funny horror of Yellowjackets. Thanks to Netflix, Season 2 is here and ready for us all to enjoy. But even with all the fun, I’m still scratching my head about where Crystal ended up.
As a dedicated cinephile, I couldn’t help but notice a fleeting mention of Crystal in Season 3 that left me with a sense of anticipation, thinking it might be a clue to some forthcoming revelations. When I had the opportunity to chat with director Ben Semanoff for his exceptional penultimate episode “How the Story Ends,” I seized the moment to ask about this enigma, given that he was also at the helm for Season 2’s captivating “Two Truths and a Lie.” With the excitement building around upcoming episodes, it feels like the perfect time to revisit his intriguing comments on the mystery.
The Mystery: What Happened To Crystal’s Body?
In Season 2, Nuha Jes Izman (Kristen) unexpectedly entered the scene, with no prior appearance in the first season. Her passion for musical theater could have led to an enjoyable performance by the survivors, but her character’s story didn’t lead to such a glorious outcome. Instead, her last moments were spent dealing with unpleasant tasks like emptying waste, discovering that Misty had damaged the radio transmitter, and tragically walking backwards off a cliff.

The stars of Yellowjackets discuss the emotional trial of the coach and it’s Sophie Thatcher’s remark that has left a lasting impression on me.
Stricken with grief and disbelief over how swiftly her friend seemed to betray her, Misty swiftly identified the frozen corpse at the bottom. Crystal’s lifeless eyes and blood-stained face left no doubt she was deceased, although this fact hasn’t deterred some fans from speculating that her death wasn’t definitively confirmed in that instant.
Later in the episode titled “Burial,” Misty attempted to locate and conceal the same corpse two episodes after its initial discovery. However, as her fellow survivors scoured other areas of the forest, she was unable to find it again. She managed to partially redeem herself by dissuading Coach Ben from a potentially suicidal act, though some might argue that his death could have spared the teenagers much anguish in the future. Regardless, the truth about Crystal’s demise remained unknown, and her body was never found again.

What Yellowjackets’ Director Ben Semanoff Told Us
In our chat, Director Ben Semanoff, known for overseeing the cannibalistic group in “Edible Complex” (Season 2’s Jackie episode), was a joy to discuss the chilling twist of Melissa killing Van. While we know the fate that befell Van’s body, with Tai burying her deceased lover post-heart consumption, there’s no such closure for Crystal. When I inquired if any discussions or plans had been made to unravel this mystery, Semanoff shared: “Indeed, there were.
As far as my memory serves me, no additional scenes involving Crystal were planned for this season beyond her mention during the trial. Misty suggested that perhaps it was Crystal who set fire to the house, but I don’t believe there was ever any intention to explore this further in the storyline.
It’s surprising that Misty couldn’t locate Crystal’s body in “Burial,” given there doesn’t seem to be a significant reason for it if this wasn’t intended to take the story in an unexpected direction at a later point. If Misty hadn’t tried to find the corpse, and the events of that episode had unfolded as portrayed, I wouldn’t have any issues. So, what was the purpose behind this plot development?
From my perspective, while I find the concept intriguing, I’m uncertain if there’s an explanation for this mystery that would not only be logical but also introduce an unexpected element. It’s hard to imagine the Wilderness arbitrarily resurrecting the dead without a compelling reason or surprise factor attached to it.
Ben Semanoff went on to explain that from his perspective, it seemed clear that she was ultimately lost beneath the snow. However, at the time of the incident, he admitted that he himself wasn’t present during the filming of “Burial,” so the exact details were hazy for him in that moment.
It seems to me that the story concludes with Misty believing she had escaped undetected, hidden under the snow. But wasn’t she discovered eventually, you might ask? I can’t quite recall… The lore surrounds it so thickly… Was it Ben who stumbled upon her up there? I believe so, but there could be some confusion as well. Perhaps it was someone else, in any case.
In my opinion, the director seemed to be hinting at Misty and Ben’s scene on the cliff in his interpretation, but it’s intriguing to ponder if Ben might stumble upon Crystal’s corpse later and keep quiet about it, so as to prevent her fate from being like that of other victims. I must admit, I find myself hoping this twist could be accurate, as it would give Ben an additional motive for setting fire to the cabin while Misty was trapped inside.
It’s unfortunate that the truth behind Crystal’s disappearance may remain unclear forever, but it wouldn’t significantly alter our understanding, regardless of whether she was taken by wild animals or Misty was searching in the wrong place. If a more intriguing explanation emerged, I’d be eager to hear it.
Luckily, there are still many mysteries left to unravel in the fourth season of Yellowjackets. However, we need to make it through and stay alive until then.
