The main components of TVD were grandiose villains, mystical beings, and intricate storylines, yet it would be dishonest not to acknowledge its romantic elements. Essentially, beneath the fantasy and action, this series delved into the complexities of young love, especially as Elena, a human, grappled with her feelings for Stefan, a vampire, and navigated her place in his world. As a doppelgänger, Elena frequently encountered peril in the supernatural realm, but she was consistently rescued by the Salvatore brothers.
In “The Vampire Diaries“, romantic entanglements were a significant aspect of the series, drawing viewers in to follow Elena’s journey as her feelings for Stefan and Damon evolved. Additionally, other characters also had compelling love lives that took center stage in the show, due to their emotional intensity and impact on how they confronted adversaries. Beyond Elena, Caroline had a range of intriguing romances with Matt, Tyler, Klaus, and Stefan, while Rebekah’s relationships with Matt, Damon, and Stefan were equally captivating. Love often played a crucial role in the storylines, such as the doppelgänger tale involving Silas, Amara, and Qetsiyah’s love triangle. Upon rewatching “TVD” today, however, it seems that the romantic relationships depicted in the show appeared unhealthy overall.
The Main Love Triangle Between Damon, Elena, and Stefan Was Toxic
In a captivating teen drama, the most poisonous dynamic often unfolded, yet it was beautiful how Elena and Stefan navigated their relationship through communication and mutual respect. Their dynamic showcased love and inspiration as they tackled supernatural challenges together in Mystic Falls. However, Damon’s arrival disrupted this harmony. From his debut, Damon exhibited cruelty, indifference, and aggression. His intention was to hurt Stefan, and he also inflicted pain on the townsfolk of Mystic Falls. Known for deceit, bloodsucking, and attacking characters like Bonnie and Caroline multiple times, Damon’s destructive behavior persisted throughout Season 1, which marked the beginning of his redemption storyline in Season 2.
Damon consistently perplexed people with his take on consent and relationships, as he often won women over, coerced them, and then ordered them around – whether it involved supplying blood or performing tasks for him. He did this to Caroline, Andie, and Vicki, forcing Vicki into vampirism without her consent and ultimately leading to her demise. This is why I was taken aback when he became a potential suitor for Elena, alongside Stefan.
From the beginning of the story, the strained relationship between Damon and Elena was evident, despite Elena’s frequent disapproval of Damon’s violent behavior towards her. This dynamic was particularly frustrating for Stefan, as it was hard to believe that Elena could be drawn to his brother, who was known for being abusive, ruthless, and aggressive. The contrast between Damon and Stefan was stark, yet Elena seemed to be attracted to both brothers simultaneously, which seemed illogical. As a character who often served as the moral compass of TVD, Elena’s values and good ethics were important to her. However, her attraction to Damon caused her to compromise her morals, setting a poor example for younger viewers who might imitate her actions in their own lives.
Beyond being a dubious decision on Elena’s part, involving both Salvatore brothers in a love triangle was unjust to them both. Damon and Stefan were both deeply attached to Elena, leaving them in a perpetual limbo as they awaited her choice. It was heartless of Elena not to make a decision sooner, given the emotional turmoil she was causing. Throughout this ordeal, both vampires grappled with their self-worth and questioned their own worthiness in Elena’s eyes, knowing full well that she held sway over their affections.
Stefan, for one, endured the agony of watching his girlfriend drift away towards a forbidden love – his brother – which only deepened his pain. Even Damon, known for his questionable actions, should not have been led on by Elena during their tense moments, which were all too frequent.
Elena seemed to treat their feelings as if they were mere playthings, failing to recognize the emotional distress she was causing. I find it disappointing that this behavior of hers was never considered a warning sign.
Almost Every Relationship In The Vampire Diaries Was Like This
The entire series, with only occasional exceptions, featured healthy characters scarcely, as most romances were built around the overused trope of love triangles. When Caroline developed feelings for Tyler, their bond appeared genuine, blending love and friendship. However, this relationship was disrupted abruptly by Klaus, who was attracted to Caroline despite his hostile behavior towards Tyler. Despite this, Caroline became increasingly drawn to Klaus, the Original Hybrid.
Caroline didn’t hesitate to get close with Klaus despite his heinous act of killing his mother. This wasn’t exactly flattering for her character. Similarly, the Salvatore brothers had previously been in a love triangle, which involved Katherine, and they were still entangled in a similar dysfunctional relationship with another doppelgänger. It seemed that this pattern was common among the characters on “TVD.” In fact, even Katherine herself had been caught between Elijah and Klaus before she turned into a vampire, which was not an uncommon situation for her character on the show either.
Indeed, it’s interesting to note that even the first immortals found themselves entangled in romantic situations similar to those seen on the show. The emotions stirred by these relationships – jealousy, anger, and so forth – ultimately led to the creation of doppelgängers, which played a significant role in the series’ teen drama. Other love triangles include Valerie, Stefan, and Caroline, as well as Enzo, Lily, and Julian. The emotional landscape of these romantic tales was marked by insecurity, competition, envy, and longing, unfortunately serving as a less-than-ideal role model for the predominantly young audience of the show.
Healthy Relationships Could Have Been Possible, But Not As Exciting
In the past, shows like “The Vampire Diaries,” which premiered in 2009, might have portrayed questionable romantic relationships that were considered acceptable and exciting at the time. However, as societal norms and expectations have evolved, many fans now find these love stories problematic. Interestingly, there weren’t many healthy or non-toxic relationships depicted in this vampire series. Out of all the relationships shown throughout its eight seasons, only Damon and Rose’s and Alaric and Jo’s could be considered wholesome and respectful. The communication between Rose and Damon was clear, they had realistic expectations of each other, and they consistently offered each other support and comfort. This makes their relationship a rare exception in the series.
Jo and Alaric were significantly older than the other characters, leading to a relationship between them that felt mature and fitting. In an unexpected turn for TVD, a heartwarming romance was rare, which I found disappointing upon reflection. The love triangle device was frequently used, often unnecessary, and could have been left out in some of the relationships on the show. However, it seemed inevitable that this plot device would reappear due to its popularity among audiences at the time, possibly as a way to keep viewers engaged.
Reflecting on my past critiques, I must confess that the allure of forbidden passion, longing, and yearning for unattainable desires were indeed captivating spectacles for viewers, as evident in contemporary series like “Bridgerton.” In light of this, revisiting “The Vampire Diaries” today reveals that its romantic core, which once seemed so radiant and enchanting, has unfortunately succumbed to the passage of time, appearing dated. Yet, it’s essential to remember that during its heyday, the show was a magnet for viewers, and eight years after its finale, it remains a cherished favorite among many.
