The director isn’t swayed by others when making his filmmaking decisions and this year’s anticipated blockbuster will remain unchanged regardless of negative reviews from critics or Henry Cavill fans. Nevertheless, Gunn has disclosed that the movie carries a certain message, as it delves into one of the most contentious issues of contemporary society: politics.
Beneath the vibrant colors, action sequences, and monstrous set pieces in the film “Superman“, lies a narrative that appears to reflect contemporary America – a society characterized by materialism, self-importance, and a shortage of empathy. Director Gunn stated this to The Times.
To me, Superman symbolizes America – a foreigner who settled in this land, but for many, it’s primarily a tale that emphasizes the importance of basic human compassion, which we seem to be lacking these days. Granted, its interpretation may vary, but at heart, it’s about promoting kindness and there will always be those who find such a message offensive simply because it’s about compassion. However, I say let them think what they will.
Indeed, the topic at hand involves politics, but it also delves into ethical principles. To put it another way, is your stance similar to Superman’s unwavering refusal to take a life under any circumstances, or do you, like Lois, believe in finding a balance? Essentially, this narrative explores their relationship and how profound differences in fundamental moral beliefs can ultimately drive two individuals apart.
James Gunn Is Taking Superman Back To His Roots in The Most Modern Way
In 1938, Superman’s debut didn’t depict him as a towering, ominous deity battling powerful extraterrestrials while harboring constant anger towards everyone. Instead, he was presented as an individual dressed in a snug, vibrant attire, complete with his underwear visible on the outside, soaring over Metropolis to apprehend criminals and deliver them to the authorities. He’d intervene to protect people from danger when mishaps occurred, and overall, he was more known for his kindness rather than any brooding or anger.
Over the years, as people have seen Superman’s transformation, there has been a shift towards a darker interpretation of the character, which eventually became the dominant view of who Superman is. However, for James Gunn, he aims to return to the classic version of Superman that he remembers from his childhood, rather than the more recent portrayals like Henry Cavill’s in “Man of Steel” and “Justice League.” Consequently, while Gunn’s Superman may boast state-of-the-art technology to make him visually appealing on screen, the essence of the film is reminiscent of Christopher Reeve’s early portrayal as Superman and the comic books that came before the 1978 film that first brought him to life on the big screen.
As a follower, I’m looking forward to the week ahead when review embargoes are set to lift, allowing us to gauge the opinions of critics on this new take on Superman. Once their reviews are out, we’ll get a better sense of how well this classic superhero holds up in today’s world. The real test, however, will be the audience reactions following the film’s release, which will give us an idea if this old-school Superman can soar to new heights in the current cinematic landscape.
