Director James Gunn, known for Superman, has hinted that the Man of Steel will return in the DC Universe soon. After a long absence from the big screen, DC Comics’ final Kryptonian is just days away from his return to cinema, portrayed by David Corenswet, who was previously seen in Twisters. Gunn’s upcoming superhero movie kickstarts a new chapter for this character and the universe, with a series of future projects already planned for the evolving DC film/TV franchise.
As a follower, I’m excited to share that even before his first DCU film hits the screens, James Gunn has hinted at David Corenswet’s next outing as Superman. Gunn’s unique interpretation of this legendary hero will steer the DCU towards the future. However, with titles like “Clayface,” “Supergirl,” and “The Brave and the Bold” on the horizon, it may not be immediately clear where we’ll see Superman next. Fear not, because Gunn is already gearing up for more Superman adventures!
In a chat with Omelet in Brazil, Gunn disclosed that he’s previously discussed with David Corenswet regarding his upcoming role within the DC Universe.
During the discussion, Gunn suggested that David has realized he’s been working on a project, yet David remains unaware of the specific details.
He wanted to know about the project I’m currently working on, but he already knows that I have something in progress and he’s involved. However, he has no clue as to the specific details or nature of the project.
This is the initial hint from Gunn about the location or timeline where we might see Superman again in his upcoming superhero series.
Earlier, when asked about a possible Superman sequel, the director stated that he is indeed working on something related to it, but expressed doubts as to whether it would be a traditional Superman sequel (as reported by Entertainment Weekly).
While what I am currently involved with shares some similarities, it might not be accurately described as a direct ‘Superman’ sequel.
Gunn’s “Superman” movie will premiere in theaters on Friday, July 11, marking the start of a fresh take on the connected DC cinematic universe directed by him. David Corenswet plays Superman, while the star-studded cast also features Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Isabela Merced, and Nathan Fillion (learn more about the “Superman” cast here).
The storyline of Superman, over the course of several years, chronicles its central character’s journey as a superhero, where he faces off against Lex Luthor – an ambitious genius harboring intense animosity towards those with extraordinary abilities, due to their emergence on Earth.
Where Will the DCU’s Superman Next Appear On-Screen?
In the DC Universe, there hasn’t been any formal announcement about a genuine follow-up to the Superman movie yet, making it somewhat puzzling for fans where exactly they might see David Corenswet’s DC Comics character next.
It seems most logical that Superman might reappear next in the 2026 series of Supergirl (previously titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow). Since Milly Alcock’s character, Kara Zor-El, is rumored to make a brief appearance in Superman, it stands to reason that Kal-El could reciprocate by making an appearance in Supergirl.
The ‘Supergirl’ hypothesis seems to have a flaw, given that Gunn clearly states he’s currently working on the script for Superman’s next on-screen appearance in the DCU.
It’s highly unlikely that the project Gunn mentioned is ‘Supergirl’, given it’s already completed both writing and filming.
It’s also possible that Gunn might be discussing the upcoming Superman film or any potential sequel to Superman. When it eventually gets released, it could appear in various formats.
1. A potential film idea is a continuation of the story from “Superman 2,” featuring another exciting adventure for the Man of Steel.
2. Alternatively, there could be a movie titled “Superman vs. The Authority,” which would explore Superman’s confrontation with the Engineer, a conflict teased in the 2025 “Superman” film.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Gunn might be hinting at a movie based on the “World’s Finest” concept, which would depict the joint adventure of Superman and Batman, serving as the foundation for the eventual formation of the Justice League.
