Jurassic World: Rebirth Crushes Expectations with Epic Box Office Surprise!

Over the Fourth of July weekend, the newest addition to the Jurassic series became a massive box office success. Starring Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, and Rupert Friend, it seized the top spot at the box office with a whopping $147.3 million domestically, according to reports. The film is currently being screened in 4,308 theaters across North America and had an initial budget of $180 million.

The seventh Jurassic film was expected to make $133.5 million during its opening weekend, but instead it made $91.5 million across the standard three-day period, surpassing initial expectations of $85.4 million.

It’s Total Pale in Comparison to Other Franchise Films

It’s true that “Rebirth” surpassed its estimated box office earnings, but the figures for the seventh film in the franchise are notably lower than the initial three-day grosses of the other “Jurassic World” movies. For instance, the original “Jurassic World” (2015) raked in an impressive $208 million during its opening weekend. Compared to this, the sequels, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” (2018) and “Jurassic World Dominion” (2022), earned $148 million and $145 million respectively over their first weekends in cinemas.

In its initial five days, the film “Jurassic World,” starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, made an impressive $258 million. Compared to this, “Fallen Kingdom” earned $181 million, and “Dominion” brought in $172 million during their respective first five days in theaters. Interestingly, the original “Jurassic Park” movie from 1993, which eventually grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, earned $407.1 million domestically alone. This classic film had a production budget of just $63 million.

The film, which is directed by Gareth Edwards (also a co-writer with David Koepp, known for writing the original Jurassic Park) has a 51% critic rating and an impressive 72% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is set five years after the events of Dominion and is its sequel.

Are Audiences Tired of Dinosaurs?

In a prior conversation with, Edwards discussed the overall concept of dinosaur films, including Jurassic Park movies. “To keep things interesting for viewers,” Edwards explained, “we need to present something novel and invigorating that will entice them to watch our movie.” So, by acknowledging upfront that audiences might not be as captivated by dinosaurs anymore, he felt it was an open and honest start. “Let’s see where this leads us,” he added.

The story unfolds as Zora Bennett (Johansson), Dr. Henry Loomis (Bailey), Duncan Kincaid (Ali), and their team pursue an intriguing mission: they aim to locate and retrieve DNA samples from three colossal dinosaurs, with the ultimate goal of developing a life-saving medication for humans.

In the course of their journey, the group encounters a family who found themselves in trouble during a boating excursion. They become stranded on an enigmatic island and eventually discover a shocking truth that has remained hidden from society for many years.

Rebirth Director Wanted to “Hate” the Script

Originally, Edwards admitted he wasn’t enthusiastic about the movie Rebirth when he first read the script. He recalled, “I picked up this script hoping to dislike it, as I was yearning for a break. I was all set to decline it politely. (However) When I finished reading the script and found myself saying, ‘It’s actually good,’ I was surprised by how vividly the characters stood out. It was one of those instances where I thought, ‘I can’t take this job.’ I felt compelled to say, ‘Alright, I won’t be able to do anything else but this.’

Jurassic World: Rebirth is currently playing in movie theaters.
