The spin-off of Better Call Saul titled “Slippin’ Jimmy” hasn’t impressed many viewers, and it’s a relief for most that Better Call Saul chose to overlook it. Although many Breaking Bad fans are acquainted with Slippin’ Jimmy, some may not be aware that there are four distinct actors portraying Saul Goodman, with Sean Giambrone providing the voice for Jimmy McGill in the animated title.
It’s quite normal for major franchises to have lesser-known TV spinoffs that you may not be familiar with, and for many people, Slippin’ Jimmy is one such example. Although Saul Goodman is an iconic character from the Breaking Bad universe, it’s a relief for viewers that the storyline of Slippin’ Jimmy doesn’t factor into the final season of Better Call Saul.
Slippin’ Jimmy Is A Bizarre Saul Goodman Prequel Released Along With Better Call Saul
The Animated Series Aired Alongside Better Call Saul’s Mid-Season 6 Finale
The animated spin-off series, Slippin’ Jimmy (based on Breaking Bad), delves into the childhood of Jimmy McGill, sharing screen time with his brother Chuck and friend Marco. Over eight episodes, released concurrently with Better Call Saul’s mid-season 6 finale, Slippin’ Jimmy reveals to viewers the significant events from Jimmy’s teenage years. These moments are portrayed using different genres such as silent comedy and supernatural horror.
Fans find it difficult to relate to the character of “Slippin’ Jimmy” for several reasons. Firstly, it represents a significant shift in tone compared to the original “Breaking Bad” series. Additionally, each episode of “Slippin’ Jimmy” is just six minutes long, which doesn’t compare to the intensity and length of either of its predecessors. Furthermore, aside from character names, there isn’t much that links it back to the franchise.
In a different perspective, “Slippin’ Jimmy” might have had potential, yet it falls short of the mark. The over-the-top style and eccentric visuals are entertaining up to a point, but compared to “Better Call Saul,” they feel disjointed and seem ill-fitted. This is particularly noticeable since Jimmy’s background in “Better Call Saul” is quite dark, whereas the narrative in “Slippin’ Jimmy” appears less intense or troubling.
Better Call Saul Gave Us The Definitive Version Of Jimmy McGill’s Origin Story
The Events Of Slippin’ Jimmy Were Explained With Just A Couple Of Scenes In Better Call Saul
The issue lies with Slippin’ Jimmy’s character because Better Call Saul has already provided details about Jimmy/Saul’s past. In episodes such as “Inflatable” from season 2 of Better Call Saul, we witness flashbacks that shed light on aspects of his early life, like the encounter with a con artist in his father’s store.
The moniker “Slippin’ Jimmy” is also derived from the series Better Call Saul, as it turns out. In a flashback scene, we learn that this nickname stemmed from Jimmy’s staged accident scams. Although it’s engaging to see these events animated in his past, the format seems somewhat unnecessary and may even detract from the impact of his actions.
In addition to its gripping plotline, Better Call Saul delves into the backstory of Saul Goodman, revealing why he abandoned his birth name, Jimmy McGill. During his time collaborating on scams with Marco, Jimmy adopts the alias Saul Goodman – a fact that lays the foundation for the character’s transformation, as portrayed in Slippin’ Jimmy. This crucial aspect is succinctly introduced and explored within only a few scenes of the series.
Exploring the enigmatic and suspicious character of Saul Goodman is a significant part of what makes Better Call Saul such an engaging show. However, portraying him as Slippin’ Jimmy in some instances seems to underplay his transformation from Jimmy McGill into the complex figure we know as Saul Goodman.
