Fist of the North Star Continues 40th Anniversary Celebrations in Major Anime Series Update
Over the weekend at the Warner Bros. panel, they unveiled the fresh trailer for an upcoming anime title – “Record of Ragnarok III” among others. As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but feel my heart race when I saw the first glimpse of the new “Fist of the North Star” remake! It seems like they’ve hit the nail on the head with this one, staying faithful to the much-admired and influential manga series that originated in the ’80s. The original’s unique art style, characterized by its over-the-top violence and gritty sci-fi vibe, is still very much intact.
The iconic character designs and fashion from the vintage manga are a sight to behold, especially when brought to life with modern animation techniques. Now, I must admit that some CG is being utilized, but it doesn’t seem to detract from the authenticity of the original work. For fans like me, this trailer is nothing short of a treasure trove of nostalgia and anticipation!
Beyond unveiling the trailer, Warner Bros. Japan also revealed some key actors set to feature in this fresh adaptation. The role of Kenshiro will be voiced by Shunsuke Takeuchi, while Daiki Yamashita and M.A.O will lend their voices to Bat and Rin respectively.
Reflecting on the 40th anniversary of the iconic “Fist of the North Star” series, the prospect of witnessing a fully reimagined version with state-of-the-art animation would undoubtedly serve as an exhilarating tribute to its rich history. The original writer, Buronson, has expressed his enthusiasm for this new adaptation, recognizing the unique opportunity it presents for both longtime fans and newcomers to experience the series in a way never before possible due to the advancements in animation technology that were unavailable previously. As he puts it, “A work from 40 years ago will be reborn as an animated masterpiece.” Being away from animation during its initial creation, he now eagerly anticipates the evolution of this timeless story through modern techniques and careful attention to the original work’s essence.
Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump between 1983 and 1988, the acclaimed series “Fist of the North Star” featured Kenshiro, now universally known, traversing a post-nuclear wasteland to demonstrate his qualifications as the successor to Hokuto Shinken, an ancient martial arts technique he was selected for. This manga series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide and spawned numerous spin-offs, anime adaptations, video games, novels, a live-action movie, and a stage musical. Among these adaptations, the most renowned is likely the anime, which also popularized one of the series’ most famous scenes and lines: “Omae wa mou Shindeiru” followed by the equally iconic “Nani?
Right now, you can stream the 1980s adaptation of the “Fist of the North Star” anime on Crunchyroll. If you’re a fan of the manga, you can find its complete English translation from VIZ Media.
