Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime series announced by CD Projekt Red and Trigger for Netflix

At the Anime Expo 2025 panel, it was me, the gamer, who got wind of an exciting announcement from CD Projekt and Trigger – Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2! This fresh spin-off anime will take place in the gritty universe of Cyberpunk 2077. Can’t wait to dive back in!

Similar to the original “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” a sequel titled “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2” is set to premiere on Netflix. As announced at a recent panel, Kai Ikarashi will be directing this new installment. Bartosz Sztybor, the showrunner, writer, and producer for “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2,” hinted that while David’s story might have concluded, there are still many more mysteries to uncover within Night City. Additionally, lead character designer Kanno Ichigo (“Promare,” original “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”) and Masahiko Otsuka (“Gurren Lagann,” “Promare”), known for their screenplay adaptations, will be involved in the development of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.”

The sequel to “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” titled “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2,” is being developed for a future release on Netflix. This new series picks up where the original, which debuted in 2022, left off.

The enhanced version of Cyberpunk 2077, known as the “Ultimate Edition,” is now playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Previously, it was accessible only on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC platforms. You can find my thoughts about this edition for Switch 2 right here.

This year at Anime Expo, from July 2nd to 6th, CD PROJEKT RED held the live panel “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Insights from its Creators,” where attendees could join. The panel included Bartosz Sztybor (story writer and producer), Emi Lo (voice of Lucy Kushinada), Zach Aguilar (voice of David Martinez), host Joey “The Anime Man” Bizinger, and a surprise visit from Hiroyuki Imaishi, the director of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

After an engaging talk about the enduring impact, production details, and intriguing behind-the-scenes facts of a renowned anime, Sztybor unveiled a fresh partnership between CD PROJEKT RED and animation studio TRIGGER for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. Alongside Imaishi, he offered a special sneak peek of the anime’s official emblem and poster design.

In the same vein, Imaishi handed over the reins formally to Kai Ikarashi (known for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and SSSS.Gridman), marking Ikarashi’s directorial debut with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. During the panel, Ikarashi appeared via a pre-recorded message and unveiled a Director’s Voice video to offer insights into his inspirations for the upcoming anime.

“David’s tale may have concluded, but there’s still much more to uncover within Night City. Having the renowned animation studio TRIGGER tag along makes us at CD PROJEKT RED thrilled to present a gritty, authentic account of redemption and vengeance – something we haven’t tackled before,” said Sztybor, showrunner, scriptwriter, and producer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. He will be accompanied by lead character designer Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will handle the screenplay adaptation. The session concluded with an invitation to a private viewing of fresh teaser footage at the Peacock Theater during TRIGGER studio’s panel later in the day.

In partnership with CD PROJEKT RED and animation house TRIGGER, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is currently being developed for broadcast on Netflix at a later date.
