The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has shared details about his original plans for Gi-hun’s story and why these plans were eventually altered. However, as the writing process progressed and I considered the message I wanted to convey through the ending, as well as Gi-hun’s journey and destination, I realized it would be more impactful for him to sacrifice himself and deliver a powerful global message in death. This became the chosen ending for the story.
