James Gunn Has Curated Music Playlists For His Superman Heroes And Villains, And One Character Is 100 Percent A Swiftie

As the release date of the highly-anticipated “Superman” movie, part of DC’s upcoming lineup under James Gunn, draws nearer next weekend, fans are growing more and more thrilled. To help build the anticipation, the director has created Spotify playlists tailored to the film’s characters. Interestingly, one character within the extensive “Superman” cast is a big fan of Taylor Swift.

James Gunn’s Superman Spotify Playlists Reveal One Character Is A True-Blue Swiftie

A couple of days ago, the “Superman Official Playlist” landed on Spotify, and it includes specific playlists writer/director James Gunn actually imagined each of the characters might listen to. While talking about the playlist on Instagram, Gunn said he’s an “obsessive about music” who “probably had more fun doing this than anything else” he’s done “in the past couple of years.”

The playlist now includes the favorite songs of David Corenswet’s Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio’s Eve Teschmacher, Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho, and Angela Spica’s The Engineer. More characters will have their playlists added soon. As Gunn mentioned, it appears that Eve Teschmacher, Lex Luthor’s assistant and girlfriend, has a strong affinity for Taylor Swift’s music.

Admittedly, I’m quite fond of Eve Teschmacher’s playlist. It’s filled with catchy girl pop tunes that I find incredibly enjoyable to listen to, so I absolutely adore it.

The 13-track playlist contains five songs by Taylor Swift: “Shake It Off,” “You Belong With Me,” “Cruel Summer,” “ME!”, and “Blank Space.” Although Eve hasn’t been featured much in the Superman promotions, understanding her musical preferences gives us valuable insights into her character. By the way, Gunn mentioned that this is likely the playlist he has replayed the most.

The type of songs Eve tends to listen to undoubtedly fall within the realm of girl pop. With tracks such as Olivia Rodrigo’s “bad idea right?”, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild,” and Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” on her playlist, it’s quite evident that this is the music selection of the lady who is dating Lex Luthor.

I’d wager that she attended Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour not once, but twice. At one performance, she embodied the spirit of “Lover,” while at another, she paid tribute to the vibe of “1989”!

How James Gunn Envisions What Superman, Lois Lane And More Listen To

From my perspective as a movie enthusiast, it’s fascinating to discover that Eve Teschmacher is a Swiftie, and the playlists James Gunn has put together, along with his comments on them, certainly provide us with a deeper understanding of the director’s vision for these beloved characters.

Clark Kent/Superman has a penchant for upbeat rock songs, such as Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle,” Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and “You Get What You Give” by the Radicals. These tunes perfectly match his casual-superhero vibe!

Meanwhile, Lois Lane’s playlist hasn’t been made available, but Gunn said this about it:

Lois’s music selection seems extremely aligned with mine. In fact, I believe her musical tastes are superior to anyone else I know.

It’s worth remembering that James Gunn, who created one of the top-tier modern soundtracks in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (and indeed his entire trilogy), took great care and consideration when compiling these playlists, so it comes as no surprise.

Case in point, the writer/director also said this about Jimmy Olsen’s not-yet-released playlist:

I’m quite fond of Jimmy’s playlist as it seems to me that none of the tracks share similarities with one another. They appear to be songs about maintaining distance from people, something I don’t believe Jimmy consciously intends. Instead, I imagine him saying, “These are just some tunes I enjoy.” It might take someone else to notice and say, “Really?”, for the connection to become apparent.

Wow, isn’t that intriguing! I’m eager to find out what songs are on that playlist. For now though, let’s enjoy the fact that we can confirm Eve Teschmacher as a dedicated Taylor Swift fan!

All in all, learning about the music preferences of Superman’s characters has us even more eager for its upcoming release. Not long now, as the film is set to premiere in theaters this coming Friday, July 11th.
