Buffy Star Died, But Wants to Return in Revival!

In the pipeline at Hulu, a new sequel series for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is being developed, and actors from the original show have shown interest in reprising their roles. Among them, Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase for three seasons of “Buffy,” stands out as a top choice for a return. Although her transition to the spin-off series, “Angel,” started off well, backstage frictions eventually led to Carpenter’s character being written off in an unflattering manner. Now, she longs for the opportunity to appear in the “Buffy” revival as a means of rectifying what she perceives as her unfair departure from “Angel.

In an interview with IGN, Carpenter shared her enthusiasm about potentially reprising her role in the Buffy revival, stating that it would be fitting and poetic given her character’s past experiences during her departure from Angel. She expressed, “I am overjoyed for fans, and I believe it will be extraordinary due to those involved. The thought of this actually happening for the fans brings me great joy. I have high hopes to be a part of this fresh take on the character.” Although Cordelia met her demise in Angel, Carpenter is optimistic that they can find a way to incorporate her character into the new Buffy series.

I’m not quite sure how to interpret it, but I’m certain there are details I’m missing. Cordelia didn’t die on Buffy; she died on Angel. I can’t be sure what that implies for Cordelia, but I remain hopeful that she is somehow involved. If she is, it would be wonderful, and it would add a beautiful touch to the story if her inclusion happened with this particular group.

What Happened to Cordelia Chase on ‘Buffy’ and ‘Angel’?

Throughout her tenure on Buffy and Angel, Carpenter’s Cordelia underwent significant growth. Initially portrayed as a shallow, popular snob who was unwillingly part of the “Scooby-Gang,” she evolved into a more mature character when she joined the spin-off. On Angel, Cordelia developed the ability to see visions of people in distress, which made her an indispensable member of Angel’s (David Boreanaz) team. However, during the fourth season, her storyline became highly controversial as she was possessed by the deity Jasmine and impregnated by Angel’s son, Connor (Vincent Kartheiser). She ended up in a coma and returned for a single guest appearance during the 100th episode milestone before being written off the show.

It was eventually understood that Cordelia’s treatment may have been a personal decision by Joss Whedon, who is known for creating shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Carpenter described a work environment that became increasingly hostile, particularly after she became pregnant during her time on Angel. This displeased Whedon, as claimed by Carpenter. During her pregnancy, Carpenter alleged that Whedon made veiled threats to fire her and made disparaging remarks about her weight. Eventually, she felt she was let go in an unceremonious manner by Whedon after he accused her of damaging the show with her real-life pregnancy. With Whedon no longer associated with the new series, there could be an opportunity for Carpenter and the character to be treated fairly. Additionally, Gellar has expressed a desire in the past to reintroduce beloved characters, regardless of whether they have perished.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but feel deeply moved by Cordelia’s story. Her growth from humble beginnings to such an impressive figure was truly captivating. But the way her journey ended… it just didn’t seem fair, somehow incomplete.

The upcoming “Buffy” series on Hulu is being overseen by Sarah Michelle Gellar, alongside Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckman. Notably, Chloé Zhao, an Oscar winner, will direct the pilot following a compelling pitch to Gellar for reviving the show. Meanwhile, Joss Whedon’s continued connection with the “Buffy” universe comes through an Audible spin-off series titled “Slayers“, which unfortunately only ran for one season, and his new podcast “The Bitch Is Back: A First Watch with Charisma Carpenter“, where the actress explores the show alongside special guests.
