7 Must-Know Superman Characters Set to Dominate the New DCU!

As a die-hard movie buff with a soft spot for the DC Universe, I’m thrilled to share that DC Studios is breathing new life into its superhero film franchise. The next big screen adventure kicks off on July 11 with none other than Superman! Post this epic return, the studio has an impressive lineup of DCU projects in the works. The masterminds behind the scenes, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are already sowing the seeds to intertwine each project, aiming to create a cohesive and engaging cinematic universe for fans like me to enjoy!

In the film “Superman”, viewers are introduced to a fresh lineup of characters. However, these characters won’t make their final appearance in this movie alone; they are set to reappear in multiple future titles within the DC Universe. In fact, several characters have already been confirmed for roles in other upcoming DC productions.

Superman Characters Who Will Appear Elsewhere in the New DCU

Green Lantern

In the upcoming series titled Superman, viewers can expect Nathan Fillion’s character, Guy Gardner, to join the ranks as the Green Lantern within the Justice Gang. However, it is important to note that he is not the only Green Lantern in the interstellar police force; there are several others serving across the cosmos.

Ryan Reynolds (Fillion) has been confirmed for roles in not just one but two upcoming DC Universe projects. First, he’ll make a brief appearance in the second season of “Peacemaker”. After that, it’s no surprise that he’ll show up alongside his fellow Green Lanterns in the HBO Max series titled “Lanterns“.

Hawkgirl

Actress Isabela Merced is set to make her superhero debut as Kendra Saunders, also known as Hawkgirl, in the upcoming film “Superman”. Known for her roles in “Madame Web” and “The Last of Us”, Hawkgirl has previously been confirmed for a role in “Peacemaker” Season 2. In this series, she was depicted evaluating John Cena’s character, Peacemaker, for a potential team member position.

After this point, it remains uncertain where Hawkgirl might make another appearance. However, Merced hinted that there are many more aspects of her character yet to be discovered.

Mr Terrific 

In the comic series Superman, audiences will encounter the third member of the Justice Gang: Mr. Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi. This character is not just any ordinary superhero; he’s equipped with cutting-edge technology and an intelligence to rival his tech.

Unlike Hawkgirl and Green Lantern from his Justice Gang, Mr. Terrific wasn’t featured in Peacemaker Season 2. But don’t worry, just because he wasn’t seen in this season doesn’t mean Gathegi’s time as the hero is done. In fact, he hinted to Entertainment Weekly that “Superman isn’t the only role I’ll be taking on.”

There are numerous spots where Gathegi might take up his character again. The actor could be featured in Peacemaker Season 2, though he hasn’t been spotted in trailers thus far. On the other hand, he may lend his voice to one of the upcoming animated DC productions.

The Engineer

María Gabriela de Faría is set to play one of the antagonists in “Superman”, known as The Engineer. This character deviates somewhat from the traditional portrayal of The Engineer in DC comics.

It appears that her character is likely to endure the movie’s plot twists, since De Faría mentioned that Gunn has discussed her character’s future in the DCU. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, he stated, “We did touch on the subject of the Engineer’s future. And [Gunn] was quite secretive… He seems to have a clear vision for this character, but he’s not sharing it with me yet.

It seems likely that the Engineer will join the ranks of The Authority, given her role as an original member in the comic books. One of many DC films based on The Authority in production is among those confirmed to be developed.

Rick Flag Sr.

Frank Grillo is among a select group of actors who have already featured in the revamped DC Universe. He played Rick Flag Sr. in the animated series “Creature Commandos” and is expected to reprise his role in Season 2 of the HBO show.

Rick Flag plays a versatile character within the DC Universe. He will first reappear in “Superman” as ARGUS director, followed by a return in “Peacemaker” Season 2 where he has disagreements with the main character due to the murder of his son. Essentially, Flag Sr. is similar to Nick Fury for the DC Universe, so Grillo can anticipate being involved in DC Studios projects for some time.

Maxwell Lord

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the new faces gracing the screen in the latest Superman film. Among them is none other than Maxwell Lord, portrayed by Sean Gunn. Just like Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, he too is a tech billionaire, adding another layer of intrigue to the storyline.

The Justice Gang receives financial support from Lord, and his company, LordTech, will maintain involvement across the extended DC Universe, beginning with Season 2 of Peacemaker. In this upcoming season, we see him conducting interviews to potentially recruit Peacemaker for his team.

Sean Gunn has portrayed more than just Maxwell in the DC Universe. The actor lent his voice or motion-capture skills to various roles in his brother’s productions, such as The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos. So, don’t be surprised if audiences encounter Sean Gunn embodying a DC character other than Superman in the future.

Superman (Rumored)

In the upcoming summer blockbuster, David Coronswet will put on the tights and cape to portray Superman/Clark Kent, a role that promises a promising future for him in the DC Universe. Known as one of the most iconic figures within the DC universe, Superman could potentially appear in numerous upcoming projects.

In the current belief, Corenswet is likely to portray Superman in the upcoming movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow“. Given that he’s Kara Zor-El’s cousin, it seems fitting for Superman to join her in this film and establish their connection as fellow Kryptonians. Similarly, Milly Alcock is anticipated to feature in a Superman movie this year, followed by her standalone performance in 2026.
