Glenn Howerton’s Shocking Confession: Nearly Quitting ‘It’s Always Sunny’ Revealed

The long-running TV sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has been airing for an extended period, nearly as long as one can remember. This FX comedy series is unique, being the longest-running live-action comedy ever produced, with its 17th season set to debut on the 2025 TV schedule soon. The cast continues to enjoy making the show, and viewers still find it entertaining, so there’s no sign of slowing down just yet. However, in the past, Glenn Howerton, who portrays Dennis, had considered leaving the show, and he shared his reasons openly.

Howerton joined a discussion with his fellow cast members Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney (formerly known as Rob Mac), Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the show. During this event, the actor openly shared his concerns about the 12th season, admitting that he questioned whether the show had become stale and overstayed its welcome, as he expressed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

I found myself concerned that perhaps we were reaching our pinnacle or plateauing, and to be honest, I felt a bit anxious as well, given how long we’ve been working together.

It’s understandable to feel that way, given that not many shows had lasted as long as theirs, and there weren’t many examples of successful shows with such longevity. Additionally, Howerton stated that at the time, he was finding it challenging to work on projects beyond Always Sunny, feeling like he was being confined within a certain box. He expressed this by saying:

I hadn’t found a way to balance my responsibilities on the show with pursuing other career aspirations I had. Honestly, I was yearning for more and was beginning to feel somewhat confined.

It’s fortunate that Howerton remained with the show and managed to juggle numerous projects. Besides Sunny, he was involved in the Netflix miniseries Sirens from 2018 to 2021, took on the lead role in NBC sitcom A.P. Bio, and appeared in the movie Blackberry in 2023. The actor has demonstrated an impressive ability to multitask while continuing his role on the cherished sitcom, a role he’s grown fond of over time.

Additionally, it’s likely that he was also capable of appreciating the distinctness of his situation. What makes Always Sunny stand out, and possibly contributes to its endurance, is that Howerton, Day, and Mac are not only actors on the show but also writers. This allows them to shape the stories and decisions their characters make. They can even modify things spontaneously, and as executive producers, they have a great deal of creative control. Such extensive creative influence is uncommon among actors in television, and he may have perceived this opportunity when Howerton took a break during Season 13 and began working on other ventures.
