The notion that sitcoms eventually come to an end was challenged when the characters from Paddy’s Pub seemed to mock it. Yet, here we are with Season 17 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia just about to air, setting a new milestone for the extended run of this popular comedy series.
In Season 16, Charlie Day’s character grappled with deep-seated family problems, Glenn Howerton’s character took a dark turn, and Rob McElhenney’s character sought purpose once more – all against the backdrop of the group’s usual outrageous, chaotic behavior.
In Season 17, you can expect even more of the same greatness, along with some exciting crossover episodes featuring Abbott Elementary and The Golden Bachelor. With Danny DeVito’s Frank and Jesse Palmer on board, these interactions promise to be nothing short of hilarious!
There’s quite a bit happening behind the scenes as well, and Rob McElhenney has officially filed to change his last name to McA. However, this isn’t the only significant accomplishment for the addictively entertaining television series.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 beats its own record
With the debut of Season 17, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has surpassed its previous record, making it the longest-running live-action sitcom ever broadcast on American television.
2021 saw it claim the title previously held by the 14-season sitcom “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” from 1952, and every subsequent season only strengthens its dominance in the TV world.
Furthermore, it’s been announced that Season 17 won’t be the final season. In fact, FXX renewed the show for four more seasons in 2020, ensuring at least one more season to come. Recently, on the No Bad Lies podcast, the actor himself, Day, confirmed that discussions about Season 18 have already taken place. He mentioned, “I was just on the phone with the team driving up here, discussing when to start work on Season 18.
Starting from July 9, 2025, Season 17 kicks off on FXX with a double premiere, followed by individual episodes released weekly. These episodes will also be streamable on Hulu. Based on the series’ description, the group seems primed for lots of exciting turmoil ahead.
According to the summary, they plan to leverage cross-network partnerships to expand their market presence, may blame an employee to dodge public criticism, are willing to take significant risks for a meeting with the Saudis, might manipulate rules through side ventures to boost their wealth, and could potentially alter many aspects of themselves to attract a wider demographic.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that just like many corporate figures, the Gang has long desired wealth and exclusive social advantages. This has been evident since 2005. However, it’s important to remember that they are individuals with their own complexities.
As a gamer, I yearn for affection, recognition, a bit of leeway with rules, endless applause, dramatic appreciation, never-ending rewards, and an uninhibited, joyful intimacy.
