Splitgate 2 player Steam count drops over 80% in under a month

On June 6, 2025, Splitgate 2 officially debuted in its entirety. However, within a mere 27 days, the game experienced a significant decline in players on PC, surpassing an 80% reduction in its player base.

Initially, Splitgate made its mark towards the end of 2021. By merging portals with intense arena-style shooting action, this free-to-play game gained significant popularity due to a strong presence on social media platforms. As a result, it attracted nearly 70,000 concurrent players simultaneously on PC.

Four years after achieving success with their original release, developers at 1047 Games launched a sequel, but by 2025, this latest version has not garnered the same positive response.

Since its launch on June 6, Splitgate 2 has seen a significant decrease in popularity. At one point, it boasted a simultaneous player count of 25,785, but today, that number has dropped drastically to just 4,107 players on Steam, which represents an impressive 84% fall.

Splitgate 2 player count in decline

At the moment I’m writing this, Splitgate has only been around for approximately 27 days. However, the number of players on PC has been steadily decreasing since its release, with less and less players coming back each day.

Regardless of the unveiling of a Battle Royale mode featuring popular FPS streamers such as Scump and Shroud, it seems that viewership numbers have remained relatively stable.

It’s clear that these statistics don’t give us the whole story. At present, we can’t determine the game’s performance on both PlayStation and Xbox platforms. Yet, this drop in numbers follows a series of setbacks for the game and its developing studio.

During Summer Game Fest, Splitgate 2 became a topic of heated debate. The CEO of 1047 Games, Ian Proulx, made a bold move by wearing a hat with the phrase ‘Let’s Make FPS Great Again’ on stage. This action sparked a significant online uproar, leading to a swift response and modifications in expensive monetization strategies. Fans strongly criticized pricey bundles available in the store, which they deemed excessive.

Last Wednesday, 1047 Games disclosed a series of job cuts, although the exact number of positions affected is yet undetermined. However, Proulx and his fellow co-founder Nicholas Bagamian have chosen not to receive their salaries temporarily as the team is working towards financial stability.
