Last of Us co‑creator Neil Druckmann exited the HBO show to tackle something bigger: sci‑fi.
In April, The Last of Us season 2 was released, offering a heart-wrenching narrative that also faced significant criticism. Critics highly commended its visuals, rhythm, and emotional depth. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received a score of 92%, while Metacritic rated it at 81 out of 100.
Opinions on the show were divided. While some criticized the Ellie and Dina storyline as being too politically correct, labeling it “woke,” others felt that Ellie seemed less tough than in previous games. However, exceptional performances by Isabela Merced and other cast members made it a must-see production nonetheless.
Thoroughout the process, Druckmann’s keen oversight guided the narrative with the same toughness and emotional depth found in the initial version.
Last of Us creator logs off HBO to go full space prophet
Neil Druckmann has handed over his creative responsibilities for the HBO series, choosing instead to focus all his energy on Naughty Dog’s upcoming projects.
Specifically, he announced that they will be responsible for writing and directing their forthcoming game titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet”. This announcement was made following the completion of season 2, prior to the commencement of season 3.

He labeled the decision as challenging but definite: the production of season 2 was completed, but work on season 3 was still a distant prospect. He intends to redirect his efforts back to Naughty Dog, where he’ll write and direct Intergalactic, while maintaining his roles as Studio Head and Creative Lead. He commended collaborating with Craig Mazin on the series and expressed gratitude towards the cast and crew for their dedicated adaptation of The Last of Us Part 1 and 2.
Intergalactic: The Rebel Prophet – a Sci-Fi Adventure (PS5-exclusive)
In this game, to be showcased at The Game Awards 2024, the protagonist is Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who finds himself stranded on an alien planet. There, he grapples with questions of faith and struggles for survival amidst otherworldly challenges.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that Tati Gabrielle, the captivating actress who brought Nora to life in season 2, stands at the helm of our cherished cast. She’s gearing up for potential adversity under Neil Druckmann’s rigorous “boot-camp” designed to prepare us for online criticism. Despite encountering backlash regarding race, gender, and style, Tati remains unyielding and resolute in her determination.
After Druckmann’s departure, Craig Mazin is now the sole leader for season 3 of the series. Despite his absence, the show continues to move forward, but some may wonder if it will maintain its edge without one of its co-creators. We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold, perhaps with fewer dragons, more zombie-like creatures (clickers), and a smoother narrative arc.
