You Won’t Believe Which Star Trek Legend Has A Secret Cameo In Elio

Recently, if you scan headlines about Elio, you’ll notice it’s been underperforming at the box office. I understand that many factors might be keeping people away from cinemas these days. However, as a passionate Star Trek fan, I urge fellow fans to venture out and watch this movie, especially since a beloved franchise actor made a memorable appearance in it. (Please note there are some minor spoilers ahead from the film.)

I didn’t notice many references to famous sci-fi series in Elio, but the discreet Star Trek nod stood out for me and contributed to my newfound love for this Pixar film. If I had known that Kate Mulgrew was in it, I might have watched it earlier.

Kate Mulgrew’s Voice Cameo Comes In At The Beginning Of Elio

At the start of the movie, Elio is accompanied by his aunt at a space center. He manages to slip off on his own and finds himself in a room containing a duplicate of one of NASA’s Voyager mission probes. When he activates an explanation about the significance of the Voyager mission, it turns out to be none other than Kate Mulgrew from Star Trek providing the information.

In the movie ‘Elio’, Mulgrew’s character isn’t well-developed, regrettably. Instead, she essentially functions as an unseen voice in the exhibition hall. However, those who are deeply familiar with classic sci-fi films or Star Trek fans with a Paramount+ subscription might have recognized her just as I did, and I can only imagine they were beaming with joy at the fittingness of it.

Why Star Trek Fans Will Lose Their Minds Over This Scene

For fans of Call Me By Your Name who aren’t deeply immersed in the realm of Star Trek, there’s an extra dose of enjoyment when observing Kate Mulgrew’s scene in the film. This is because she played Cpt. Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager, a role that wouldn’t have been televised until years after NASA’s initial mission. However, it seems unlikely that this was just a random casting choice; her portrayal could have easily been done by any actor without referencing genre lore.

More On Elio

Disney certainly pushed the boundaries with their recent Elio post: “If you don’t like that Disney isn’t creating new stories, then don’t forget to go see their movies in the theater!

In a recent development, Kate Mulgrew’s new venture in animation follows Netflix parting ways with “Star Trek: Prodigy“, the animated “Trek” series where her Janeway character was an A.I. version. The actress remains busy in Hollywood and hinted to fans that she is open to reprising her role if the opportunity arises, expressing that “the door isn’t definitively closed” for a live-action comeback.

Although we’re unsure if or when she’ll be back for Star Trek, it’s thrilling to witness her shine in the voice role of Elio. The new Disney film has faced challenges at the box office despite positive feedback from viewers who have watched it. I hope that now that Star Trek fans know one of their beloved captains is featured in this movie, they’ll give it a chance and discover the film that many are currently overlooking.

Be sure to catch “Elio” in theaters, as it’s one of my favorite Disney/Pixar collaborations from recent years! Unfortunately, it appears this film may be another late addition to the sci-fi genre, but I remain hopeful that it will find its niche audience.
