Ex-McDonald’s chef explains why some stores miss out on popular items

A previous McDonald’s cook has shared reasons behind certain locations not offering popular menu options, addressing the common ‘participating restaurants’ disclaimers.

As a gaming enthusiast, sometimes it feels like I’m stuck on the same level of my favorite game, but then suddenly, there’s an update! McDonald’s is just like that. Even though they have their regular menu, they surprise us with limited-time offers now and then. It’s like finding a secret power-up – the Chicken Sharebox, McRib, spicy chicken nuggets, or unique McFlurries. These brief appearances keep our gaming experience, I mean, fast-food adventure exciting!

In some instances, you may find certain products available at stores within your locality, while others might be missing, due to the restriction that they are available ‘only at participating outlets’.

It can be quite frustrating when you find something on sale online but cannot purchase it from your local shop. However, Mike Haracz, a former corporate chef at McDonald’s, explains the reason behind this situation.

McDonald’s owners can deny popular menu items

To clarify, it’s important to grasp the dynamic between McDonald’s as a corporation and its individual franchisees. While these franchise owners do have agreements with McDonald’s, they maintain the ability to make certain independent decisions.

Most McDonald’s restaurants today are owned and managed by independent franchisees, rather than being directly run by the corporation. These franchise owners have the power to decide on certain menu items, offerings, and pricing, although McDonald’s corporate provides recommendations on these matters. The corporation, however, does not have the authority to mandate specific prices, staffing levels, or wages for the franchisees.

When a restaurant participates in a certain area or group, they have the ability to decline a new offering if they already have other dishes on their menu, marketing strategies, or any other commitments.

Additionally, there are certain goods that can be obtained exclusively at the McDonald’s headquarters located in Chicago, which houses their international retail outlet as well.

For a few weeks, this menu features curly fries and one of Japan’s top-selling McFlurries. Additionally, for a limited period, Canadian McDonald’s outlets are serving pizza pockets as well.
