In simpler terms, “Jurassic World Rebirth” is a fresh start for the Jurassic Park series, packed with nods, humor, and reminders to the film that launched it all.
In the scorching summer of 1993, Jurassic Park graced the silver screen and swiftly turned into an unprecedented box office hit. By the close of that sun-kissed season, it had earned the title of the highest-grossing film ever made.
Subsequently, sequels were produced, thanks to The Lost World and Jurassic Park III, and most recently, people have been drawn to the Jurassic World trilogy. This has significantly boosted the franchise’s global box office earnings past the $5 billion mark.
In essence, this movie is a fresh start with new personalities, yet it’s penned by the original screenwriter of Jurassic Park, David Koepp. He’s subtly included several winks to the Jurassic Park history in the script… SPOILERS are coming up…
Objects in the rear-view mirror
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but draw a parallel between the iconic song by Meat Loaf and a hilarious moment from the 1993 blockbuster, Jurassic Park. You know, that phrase “Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are” isn’t just a catchy tune; it’s also a witty joke in the movie, reminding us that sometimes, things can seem closer than they really are – especially when you’re running from a T-Rex!
As Ian Malcolm accelerates to escape the Tyrannosaurus rex in his Jeep, he catches a glimpse of the massive T-rex reflected in the side mirror, and the phrase “things behind you are nearer than they seem” comes to mind.
In Jurassic World: Rebirth, the character of Martin Klebs, portrayed by Rupert Friend, is initially seen somewhat similarly – he’s first caught in a car mirror, just as the same phrase had previously been used.
Duncan’s flare
In the iconic scene from the first Jurassic Park movie, Lex and Tim find themselves potentially becoming the Tyrannosaurus rex’s next meal.
In a bold move to divert danger, Dr. Ian Malcolm intentionally draws the dinosaur’s focus by waving a flare, prompting the T-Rex to pursue him instead of others.
In Rebirth, Duncan Kincaid (played by Mahershala Ali) utilizes a flare as a distraction, drawing the attention of the Distortus rex, thus granting his fellow team members the necessary time to board a boat and flee safely.
Henry Loomis = Alan Grant
In the fictional universe of Rebirth, Dr. Henry Loomis, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey, serves as their interpretation of Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park. He’s a charismatic paleontologist, exhibiting a softer side in his everyday life. However, when the situation demands it, he can quickly morph into an unyielding tough guy.
In Jurassic Park, Grant shows great surprise upon encountering prehistoric animals in their natural habitat, and Loomis displays similar emotion when he initially touches a dinosaur.
Throughout the movie, it becomes clear that Loomis was a pupil of Grant, and in behind-the-scenes information, we discover that he even utilizes Alan’s trowel. “To continue Alan Grant’s legacy is an honor,” states Baliey. “Playing Henry, who encapsulates our affection for nature and our curiosity about it, was a delight.
If you view the Jurassic films as horror flicks, then the character of Loomis carries a rich and significant legacy within this genre. He’s been featured prominently in Psycho and Scream, and is most iconically portrayed by Donald Pleasance as the doctor with that very name in Halloween.
When dinosaurs ruled the earth!
In simpler terms, “Jurassic Park concludes with the T-Rex defeating two Velociraptors, followed by its mighty roar as a sign reading ‘When Dinosaurs Dominated Earth’ drops down.
In the opening scene of Rebirth, you can spot the identical sign dropping down as Dr. Henry Loomis prepares to close the dinosaur exhibit at his workplace, the museum.
Thirty years after the reappearance of these ancient beasts, there’s not as much excitement about them as before – it’s a nod to the past, but also a reflection of the waning public fascination with them.
Gas station = kitchen
In the thrilling world of Jurassic Park, one sequence that left an indelible mark on me is when I found myself fleeing from those formidable Velociraptors, darting through a bustling kitchen.
In this nerve-wracking moment, dinosaurs scuttle about the room, tapping their sharp nails against the floor, knocking over pots and pans, and getting perplexed when they encounter a reflective surface.
In Rebirth, there’s a remarkably similar sequence where dinosaurs chase a child through a deserted gas station. As they dash about, knocking over displays in their path, they also get puzzled by their own reflections.
