Disney’s 4th Box Office Bomb of 2025

2025 looks challenging for Disney’s cinematic lineup, as a series of disappointing box office results continues with ‘Elio’. Currently, four films have failed to meet expectations, adding another blow to Disney, often referred to as “The House of Mouse”.

Pixar Animation Studios’ debut film titled “Elio” has struggled to attract audiences since its launch in June. Despite being Disney’s initial animated release for the year, it followed three previous box office flops: “Captain America: Brave New World“, “Snow White“, and an unspecified film titled “Thunderbolts“.

On February 14, the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” had difficulty resonating with viewers and was overshadowed by mediocre reviews and production problems. Subsequently, marred by controversies, Disney’s newest live-action take on “Snow White,” which premiered on March 21, failed to captivate audiences. Lastly, on May 2, despite favorable critiques, Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts” fell short in attracting a wide audience due to its relatively new cast and previous MCU letdowns.

*Note: “Thunderbolts” is not an actual Marvel Studios movie at the time of writing this example.

As a devoted cinephile reflecting on Disney’s latest cinematic misstep, “Elio,” I can’t help but wonder why this movie didn’t resonate with families or fans in the way we’d hoped.

Is There Something Wrong With Disney’s Pixar?

In contrast to Disney’s continuous focus on franchises and sequels, Elio was introduced as an innovative idea hailing from a top-tier animation studio. This original concept delved into the realms of science fiction and even touched upon elements of horror (to learn more about Pixar’s decision to explore horror, click here!).

Nonetheless, before its launch, there were indicators suggesting that Elio might not live up to expectations, and here are some reasons why. For example, one of the major points of contention was Disney’s marketing strategy, which appeared to be restrictive, ambiguous, and ineffective at communicating the significance or allure of Elio>.

A portion of this, perhaps, stems from Elio’s perspective. Although Pixar is renowned for storytelling that transcends the plot, an abduction movie by aliens might initially seem unremarkable or disconnected, as audiences struggle to empathize with alien characters. Moreover, not all Pixar enthusiasts appreciate the studio’s more animated art style, which has been featured in previous films like Luca and Turning Red.

Indeed, there’s also the issue of Disney+ influencing movie-watching habits. Some argue that Disney trains viewers to skip theaters and instead wait for a film to appear on Disney+, but this claim is mostly applicable to their less extraordinary productions. Movies like “Inside Out 2” or “Moana 2” were not delayed by audiences waiting for streaming releases, indicating that people are willing to pay the high theater prices and popcorn costs if a movie is perceived as an event or already carries a reputation for quality. In fact, this trend may have been amplified due to Pixar’s recent string of hits and misses.

Without much fanfare, receiving mixed feedback, and no guarantee of being a worthwhile investment, viewers showed little eagerness to watch the movie titled Elio. The film’s future ticket sales may improve during its theater release, similar to Elemental, or it might find its audience once available on Disney+. At this moment, with four consecutive box office disappointments, it remains intriguing to observe how Disney will react and if their 2025 lineup can recover going forward.

Titled “Elio” and helmed by directors Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina, this animated film tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who is mistaken for Earth’s ambassador by extraterrestrial beings and whisked away to the Communiverse, a union of various alien societies. The movie features Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldana, and Brad Garret in pivotal roles. Notably, Garret’s childhood experiences lend a creepy edge to his character. “Elio” premiered in cinemas on June 20.
