Ed O’Neill’s Hilarious Reason for Leaving Work Early on Modern Family Set

Ed O’Neill is undeniably a TV legend, with his roles on “Married… with Children” and “Modern Family,” he not only shaped some endearing sitcom families but also contributed to some of the finest sitcoms ever made. Apart from being well-liked on set, O’Neill has a knack for getting up to mischief behind the scenes. In fact, one of his previous co-stars recently shared a humorous story about him quitting earlier than anticipated.

Julie Bowen, known for portraying Ed O’Neill’s daughter on all 11 seasons of Modern Family, shared an amusing anecdote during her appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. During their conversation, Rosenbaum inquired about working with O’Neill, whom Bowen referred to as “absolutely charming.” Later in the discussion, Bowen revealed a humorous incident where her former co-star, under a misunderstanding, left work early for the day. As per Bowen, this mishap occurred because O’Neill thought filming had ended for the day when it actually hadn’t.

One day, he hopped into his vehicle and headed home, assuming our session was over. However, they needed him again, so they reached out to him. In a way that suggested confidence, he said, ‘I believe we nailed it,’ which was a sign of approval for the director to proceed. Meanwhile, they were adjusting lighting, and he left in his car.

Such a mistake exudes a relaxed, dad-like vibe, and honestly, it’s quite amusing. To be fair, O’Neill has been in the entertainment industry for quite some time, focusing on comedy. He understands what resonates and what doesn’t from that perspective. However, it’s important to note that an actor must still perform appropriately given this experience.

Julie Bowen highly admired her on-screen father, Ed O’Neill, calling him a “wellspring of knowledge and insight.” It seems that he also functioned as a mentor to the younger cast members of “Modern Family,” including Rico Rodriguez, who portrayed his character’s stepson. Interestingly, Bowen mentioned that his advice might shed light on why he abruptly left that rehearsal: O’Neill could have been drawing on his vast experience to guide them swiftly and effectively.

As we went along, it became clear that the guidance he was providing Rico [Rodriguez] or any of us was essentially focused on leaving set early. In other words, when the director asks, “How was that?”, respond with “Good, good, good” and then make your exit. (Mimicking O’Neill)

When I thought I couldn’t admire O’Neill any more, Bowen adds these charming remarks, leaving me puzzled over which aspect I appreciate most – the fact that everyone eventually understood his motive or the skillful way he provided guidance. Regardless, it’s heartening to know the cast shared genuine bonds similar to their on-screen personas. Moreover, there are numerous family-oriented shows available on the 2025 TV schedule, but Jay Pritchett and his family continue to be missed. Fortunately, all 11 seasons of Modern Family can be enjoyed with a Hulu subscription.

As a fan, I’m still eagerly wondering if a comeback for “Modern Family” could be possible. The thought of the whole cast reuniting is thrilling! However, should the project take off, I can only cross my fingers and hope that Ed O’Neill avoids any repeat of his earlier hiccups, such as his sudden departure.
