As the global release of his Superman reboot approaches, James Gunn has been detailing how the Star Wars films, the Game of Thrones series, and comic books have influenced his handling of the content.
James Gunn captivated everyone with a sentient tree and a chatty raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, and now he aims to convince viewers that a man is capable of flying in his upcoming Superman film.
In the latest DC Universe, David Corenswet portrays the strong and mighty Superman, setting things in motion. Meanwhile, Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult brings Lex Luther to life.
As a passionate fan, I can’t contain my excitement as I share this exciting news! The upcoming movie boasts an impressive lineup of both heroes and villains in its vast ensemble. Recently, at a UK event, Director Gunn couldn’t help but reveal some tantalizing details about the film that has everyone buzzing. Coincidentally, on the same day, his Superman was suspended high above a London skyscraper, adding to the anticipation!
James Gunn says “we can destroy anything at any time” in the DCU
During an interaction with the audience, Gunn shared that he employed a method similar to comic books when working on the initial DC Universe film, also considering the ways in which Star Wars and Game of Thrones crafted their respective universes.
According to Gunn, it’s unlikely that people who read comics began with the very first issue. Instead, we usually jump right into the heart of these narratives. This enchanting universe is what I adore.
I have a fondness for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as various elements within the DC Extended Universe. Yet, my passion extends beyond these two universes to include Star Wars and Game of Thrones. In crafting my own universe, I sought a distinct identity, and one aspect that always appealed to me about DC was its creation of an alternate reality. Instead of New York, we have Gotham. Metropolis, Evergreen, Star City, Central City, and many more – these are not Earth’s cities but part of a fictional world.
I had this idea to construct another world, another universe, if you will. I find it fascinating, this process of designing entire realms, as it grants me unlimited possibilities. For instance, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), destroying New York City would be a weighty decision. However, in an alternate universe like the DCU, anything is possible – we could even wipe out a continent if we so desired. This freedom to create and shape things as I see fit is what excites me.
I appreciate the creativity behind it, and I enjoy that we’re crafting interconnected narratives across multiple platforms. Moreover, by tapping into an expansive timeline of stories, we can focus on any particular tale to tell a smaller story. This is simply one such narrative fragment we’ve chosen.
This is actually the second, following ‘Creature Commandos’. However, it’s the initial film installation, which I find exciting to tackle as the first.
You can catch Superman in theaters on July 11, 2025. Until then, look forward to updates about the Man of Steel’s post-credits scene, theories about a possible Justice League film, insights into Mr. Handsome, details of changes made by James Gunn following test screenings, and the reason behind this Superman wearing briefs over his tights.
