As a dedicated admirer, I must express my excitement over the early buzz surrounding Donkey Kong Bananza. Some have likened it to a Super Mario Odyssey-like moment for the DK series, and I can’t help but agree. The reason being, Bananza is being crafted by the very same studio known for creating one of the finest Super Mario games ever madeSuper Mario Galaxy, a claim that may be disputed by some ardent Super Mario Galaxy fans.
I’ve always been eagerly anticipating news about the next big 3D Mario game, and while Nintendo has given us hints during their Treehouse presentations, they’re keeping tight-lipped about who’s spearheading this project or the key players involved. This could be why we haven’t seen a new 3D Mario title since 2017, but there have been plenty of other Mario projects in the meantime. It seems like Donkey Kong’s ambitious new adventure has been taking up most of the studio’s resources. I’ve reached out to Nintendo for more details and will update this post as soon as they respond.
According to VGC, the creative direction for contemporary 3D Mario games has been spearheaded by Kenta Motokura, Yoshiaki Koizumi, and Koichi Hayahsida. However, since Super Mario Odyssey in 2017, these names haven’t appeared on EPD-produced titles. Many of these games have been collaboratively developed with other Nintendo divisions. It is significant to mention that Nintendo has a remarkably high rate of employee retention compared to numerous studios and publishers worldwide, where mass layoffs have regrettably become quite frequent.
Donkey Kong: Bananza is set to release on July 17th for Nintendo Switch 2, and it looks like an essential addition to the console’s growing library of games.
In Steve Watt’s Donkey Kong Bananza preview, he notes that this is a fresh 3D platformer developed by the same team responsible for Super Mario Odyssey – widely recognized as one of the genre’s finest examples. From afar, it may seem challenging to grasp how all its diverse components merge, but a thorough hands-on session demonstrated to him how every piece fits harmoniously together, creating an innovative gaming experience that appears to be a logical progression for the Odyssey team and, in some aspects, echoes the early days of 3D platforming on the Nintendo 64.
