Kojima Says Remote Working Is “Like A Fast Food Chain,” Not Ideal For Making Games

Veteran game designer Hideo Kojima recently voiced his thoughts on the recent shift towards remote work within the gaming industry, suggesting that while traditional office settings may not be the perfect environment, compelling everyone to return to the office might not be the best solution either.

In an interview with The Guardian, Kojima compared remote work to a fast-food chain, explaining that individuals tend to focus only on their specific tasks rather than the overall project as a whole. The newspaper added that Kojima suggested that working remotely, instead of being in an office with colleagues, could lead to inefficiencies due to the absence of regular interaction with team members who are physically nearby.

He remarked, “During online meetings, only a small fraction of who you truly are is revealed. This isn’t about creating a team like football. Consider this: You recruit someone, and he joins your team, but you can’t play together remotely. So that person continues to perform as they did before, and may not be the right fit for the team.

As a devoted admirer, I’m sharing a thought that rings true from Hideo Kojima himself: “I understand that it’s not possible to compel folks to return to the office; instead, all one can do is attempt to convince them.

According to Kojima Productions’ statement, while not all team members returned to work on Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, it was the main group who did.
