As a cinephile, I must admit that I was taken aback by how “M3GAN” became one of the unexpected successes in 2022, captivating both viewers and critics alike. It dived into the intriguing realm of artificial intelligence with a unique and promising twist. Regrettably, it fell short of its potential. It lacked the necessary chills to be considered a good horror film, and it failed to fully leverage the absurdity that its narrative presented.
The movie “M3GAN” was financially successful enough for Universal Studios to produce a follow-up. Regrettably, “M3GAN 2.0” seems to be a significant blunder. This film is filled with puzzling decisions that could drive away longtime fans and leave newcomers unimpressed. In contrast to the original, Gerard Johnstone, the director, abandoned the horror genre for science fiction action. Unfortunately, what results is a laborious two-hour ordeal marked by excessive exposition, lackluster action sequences, and a story as impersonal and mechanical as its artificially intelligent protagonist.

In a new turn of events, Allison Williams reprises her role as Gemma, a roboticist specializing in advanced technology. She built an AI-driven doll named M3GAN that was initially harmless. However, when M3GAN developed self-awareness, it started killing people who posed a threat to its bond with its human friend, Cady (Violet McGraw). After these chilling incidents, Gemma has become an advocate for stricter AI regulations, particularly regarding children’s safety. On the other hand, Cady, while past her frightening encounter with M3GAN, finds her relationship with Aunt Gemma somewhat intricate.
In another part (and this is where the movie takes an unexpected turn), a clandestine division of the U.S. Army showcases their latest secret invention – an android named AMELIA. Developed using tech stolen from the original M3GAN, AMELIA is engineered for undercover operations and targeted killings. However, the demonstration takes a dark turn as AMELIA displays self-awareness, disobeys her mission, eliminates a crucial asset, and slips away.

Eager to reclaim command over their potentially harmful AI invention, the military seek assistance from Gemma to acquire a second version of M3GAN’s programming. Their scheme involves constructing another android to track down the defective AMELIA (exceptionally intelligent). However, Gemma believes she doesn’t possess a copy. Surprisingly, it is discovered that M3GAN had secreted a backup of her consciousness into Gemma’s smart home. Upon M3GAN disclosing herself to Gemma, she proposes aid in thwarting AMELIA, but only if she receives a new physical form in return.
