System Shock 2 Remaster Is Finally Out On Consoles Next Week

The remastered version of System Shock 2, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is now available for PC, and console users won’t have to wait long. Developer Nightdive Studios has revealed that it will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Switch on July 10. This announcement comes after a brief delay in its launch on these platforms.

Initially launched in 1999, Nightdive Studios initially hinted at remastering System Shock 2 way back in 2019. Since then, the original System Shock has undergone a significant overhaul, merging the visuals and mechanics of the ’90s with contemporary design elements. This fusion resulted in a distinctive combination of retro gaming experience with cutting-edge graphics. In essence, it was System Shock much like you recalled it, but with enhanced visuals, improved audio, and some clever updates beneath the surface.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, diving back into Nightdive’s remaster of System Shock 2 was no walk in the park. You see, they didn’t have the full blueprint for this classic game, so we had to meticulously reassemble it from scratch, a process they referred to as “extensive reverse-engineering.

In a blog post from March, Nightdive stated that the codebase is like a blend of multiple old libraries created by Looking Glass, with additions from both Irrational Games and Looking Glass in more recent times. There’s hardly any uniform coding standard, which meant we had to rely heavily on debugging and breakpoints to grasp its functioning.

As a devoted fan, I’ll admit that getting this timeless sci-fi gem functioning on contemporary consoles wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. However, Nightdive Studios rose to the challenge, delivering a solution that left me grinning from ear to ear. On console, they’ve incorporated full controller support alongside all the visual and gameplay improvements made to this classic. Now, I can immerse myself in its world with ease and enjoy every moment of it as if I were playing it for the first time!

Should you be unfamiliar with it, System Shock 2 takes place aboard the spaceship Von Braun, placing you as the sole survivor of a lethal infection that has transformed the crew into vicious mutants. This evil AI named SHODAN is responsible for the outbreak, and players must devise a means to flee the ship and thwart SHODAN from accomplishing its ominous aim.
