Superman’s Anger: The Key to James Gunn’s DC Flick, Revealed by David Corenswet

One classic comic book character that stands out among others is Superman, who has been brought to life on the big screen multiple times over the years (you can witness this with a Max subscription). The upcoming DC film set to grace theaters is titled “Superman” by James Gunn, and it’s David Corenswet who takes on the lead role. In a recent interview, he discussed the visible anger in Clark Kent as portrayed in the trailer, which reportedly plays a significant part in the movie.

Our understanding of Superman remains fairly restricted, leading fans to scrutinize every snippet of the footage we’ve been provided so far. This includes a controversial scene featuring Lois Lane and Clark Kent in an argument, where Superman exhibits an unusual display of anger. During his appearance on CBS Sunday Morning to publicize the movie, he discussed the usual portrayal of the character, comparing it to Christopher Reeve’s contrast between Clark and Superman. However, this new film deviates from that approach, as Corenswet explained.

In my critique as a film enthusiast, I must commend the creators for their intriguing portrayal of a third character in this production. As of yet, we haven’t assigned a definitive name to this enigmatic figure – whether it be Kel-El or Clark. However, this character transcends the dichotomy between Superman and Clark Kent, his alter ego. Instead, he embodies a truer version of himself when interacting with individuals who are privy to his dual identity. This layered portrayal adds depth to the narrative and keeps viewers guessing about who the ‘real’ character is – an exciting twist in the world of superheroes!

This new interpretation promises an intriguing twist on our cherished DC superhero. Despite Superman symbolizing hope, he remains human with imperfections. He must portray a single image publicly, but there are select individuals with whom he can be genuinely open. The forthcoming scenes will reveal fresh dimensions of Kal-El.

Tyler Hoechlin is spearheading the cast of the upcoming ‘Superman’ project, and it seems that he and director James Gunn have carefully planned out their approach to embody the title character. In his own words, this “third character” plays a significant role in Clark Kent’s family dynamics, including his parents, as well as Rachel Brosnahan’s portrayal of Lois Lane. As Hoechlin explained:

Lois Lane recognizes that he assumes two personas, Superman and Clark Kent, and she engages with him in different ways as each character. In her role as a journalist, she deals with Superman; while as a colleague, she works alongside Clark Kent. She’s among the few who witness him outside of these roles, experiencing glimpses of both his identities.

In contrast to certain iterations of Superman concealing his superhero identity from Lois Lane, it appears that James Gunn’s movie will not follow this pattern. Instead, this portrayal of the relationship between Lois and the titular character is expected to add fresh dimensions to a beloved figure. Moreover, an unusual display of Clark Kent’s anger will reportedly be a significant aspect of this rendition of the superhero. As put by Corenswet himself:

“Unlike some variations of Superman keeping Lois in the dark about his superhero identity, it seems that won’t be the case in James Gunn’s production. The dynamics between Lois and our character are set to introduce new shades to a cherished figure. Additionally, this version highlights an unusual aspect of Clark Kent’s anger.

In my opinion, that pivotal moment truly reveals the core of that character. It’s striking because it shows him without the need to be a hero or maintain his composed demeanor for the public eye.

In a similar fashion to other notable personalities, it appears that Superman is carefully crafting his persona in the upcoming film. It’s mainly through the appropriate audience that he feels comfortable shedding his defenses and displaying a broad spectrum of human feelings. With Lois Lane, it seems to be all about perception. As the actor portraying him stated:

The situation becomes private between him and Lois. Instead of observing his rage towards Lois, you can notice his exasperation due to her viewpoint. Moreover, it’s evident that he’s deeply passionate about believing in the correctness of his actions.

In a one-on-one setting with Lois, his emotions shift from visible anger to obvious frustration with her stance. At the same time, his conviction about doing the right thing shines through, making it clear he’s passionate about his beliefs.

As a die-hard Superman fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly anticipate James Gunn’s fresh take on the iconic DC hero. This innovative twist promises to breathe new life into the Man of Steel, and soon enough, we’ll all be able to witness this marvelous creation on the silver screen.

On July 11th, 2025, when Superman hits theaters, we can expect all secrets to be unveiled. Additionally, there’s hope that David Corenswet will resume his role in the DC Universe at some point within their initial lineup of projects.
