Mortal Kombat 2 gets surprising early verdict from the game’s co-creator

In a surprising turn of events, the upcoming cinema release of Mortal Kombat 2, the long-awaited sequel, has garnered an endorsement that might catch you off guard – considering their reaction to the original movie.

2021 saw Warner Bros reviving Mortal Kombat for the silver screen, marking almost 25 years since the disappointing Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Despite facing limitations due to global lockdowns, this reboot proved popular, earning $84 million globally and raking in substantial video-on-demand sales.

Nevertheless, the film didn’t receive universal approval from fans. There were several significant complaints: firstly, an overuse of digital CGI blood instead of practical effects was noticed; secondly, the introduction of Cole Young was questionable; and thirdly, it was disappointing that a movie titled Mortal Kombat failed to include the main tournament.

I’m stoked! It seems like they’re rectifying the issues from the last game in the upcoming sequel, and that’s got Ed Boon, one of the masterminds behind these games, pretty excited too.

Ed Boon says Mortal Kombat 2 “nailed it”

Boon expressed on Twitter that not only has he watched the final edition of Mortal Kombat 2, but he also found it enjoyable.

I just wrapped up watching the final version of Mortal Kombat 2, and it’s fantastic! Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, and Lewis Tan as Cole Young were spot-on! Can’t wait for October to arrive so we can see more! Come on Todd Garner, hurry up!

He just wrapped up viewing the final cut of Mortal Kombat 2! He’s impressed with Martyn Ford as Shao Khan, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and Lewis Tan as Cole Young,” he expressed, offering praise.

He expressed his eagerness by saying, “I can’t wait for October to arrive quickly,” and asked Todd Garner to speed things up, to which Garner responded, “The excitement will begin shortly.

Fans will likely find this reassuring, as it suggests that the new Mortal Kombat film could be a significant upgrade. Previously, Boon appeared to downplay or even dismiss the first film, leaving some to speculate about his feelings towards its artistic choices; for instance, he shared the trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League but did not promote any materials related to the original Mortal Kombat movie.

Apart from expressing approval for a fan’s tweet about disliking the film, he himself has never publicly stated on social media or in interviews that he disliked it. Instead, his silence can be interpreted as a positive gesture, given that he’s actively promoting the sequel.

Ever since I’ve been deeply immersed in the creation process of Mortal Kombat 2, it’s been an incredible journey. Just recently, Garner shared a picture of my work station on set, captioned with the title “LEGEND” beneath my name. What an honor!

Truth…

In addition, he had a conversation with Entertainment Weekly back in October of the previous year, disclosing various aspects of the plot. For instance, he mentioned the introduction of Karl Urban’s character, Johnny Cage; the scope of Hiroyuki Sanada’s portrayal of Scorpion this time; and how the movie depicts the tournament.

During the film, points are continuously tallied, and there’s a clear visual depiction of who is leading… it’s not just a random competition. The stakes are high, so keeping track of the score matters significantly. Additionally, the plot has several unexpected turns that keep you guessing. This was stated by him.
