Titled “Project Hail Mary,” this captivating sci-fi novel features a solitary astronaut, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, on a journey through space with the mission to save Earth. This forthcoming project is not a reiteration of “The Martian” but shares similarities as it’s also based on a Hugo Award–nominated book by Andy Weir. Unlike its predecessors, “The Martian” and Gosling’s previous space adventure in “First Man,” this production appears to be a unique blend of gravity-defying drama and lighthearted fun, directed by the duo behind “21 Jump Street” and the “Spider-Verse” franchise. Intriguingly, it seems that “The Martian” did not feature Sandra Hüller as a commanding figure trying to save the world. For further details about “Project Hail Mary,” continue reading below.
What’s in the trailer?

As a cinephile, I find myself in unfamiliar surroundings with an unruly mane, light-years away from my humble abode. The trailer then unfurls the ominous news that our very own sun, along with other celestial bodies, is on its deathbed. Director Hüller posits that it’s none other than me, Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher, who holds the key to saving these dying stars. Yet I protest, insisting that I can barely manage the moonwalk. The mystery remains as to why I was selected for this cosmic mission. Hüller’s character reveals that my academic background in microbiology might be the reason, but he fails to mention that a multitude of individuals boast similar credentials. Regardless, I find myself launched into space, where I engage with an extraterrestrial entity and teach it the human gesture of giving a thumbs-up.
Who is in the cast?
In the upcoming production, Gosling will take on the lead role as Ryland Grace. The breakout talent from Anatomy of a Fall, Hüller, will portray Eva Stratt, a formidable German superior to Gosling’s character. Additionally, Lionel Boyce from The Bear will join the cast as a resident baker, while Ken Leung, known for his role in Industry, will wield a baseball bat. Lastly, Milana Vayntrub, who has appeared in AT&T commercials, will also be part of the cast.
When is it out?
Project Hail Mary comes out on March 20, 2026. Yes, that does feel like light-years away.
