This year, Brandon Salisbury’s documentary, titled “George Romero’s Resident Evil,” was released on digital platforms. The film delves into Romero’s initial involvement with the Resident Evil series and the movie adaptation he planned but ultimately didn’t make. Now, you can stream George Romero’s Resident Evil for free on YouTube, offering a comprehensive retrospective on what might have transpired in the project.
The films by George A. Romero, particularly Night of the Living Dead and its sequels, significantly impacted Capcom’s Resident Evil series. In fact, Romero was invited to direct a live-action commercial for Resident Evil 2, which was intended solely for Japanese viewers. Some behind-the-scenes stories about the production include Romero directing in shorts and flip flops despite the California cold, as well as expressing amazement that it was the highest per-second budget he had ever worked with on a project.
The director openly expressed his enthusiasm for directing a live-action Resident Evil film, which he later got signed on to write and direct. Interestingly, Romero also brought horror comic book legend Bernie Wrightson aboard to design Tyrant for the movie. Despite taking some creative liberties with the source material, such as turning Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine into romantic leads, Romero’s script was more faithful to the original story compared to the Resident Evil film made by Paul W.S. Anderson, which was produced without any input from Romero.
The documentary reveals that the collaboration between Romero and producer Bernd Eichinger on Resident Evil disintegrated significantly, primarily due to a strong disagreement over the amount of graphic violence and gore in the script. Eichinger strongly objected to the violent content typical of Romero’s earlier zombie films, which eventually led to Romero being replaced from the Resident Evil project because he refused to water down his original vision for it.
The upcoming Resident Evil movie will be directed by Zach Cregger, who has just finished a film called Barbarian and referred to it as being inspired by the video games’ essence. This movie is set to hit theaters in September 2026. Before that, another Resident Evil game titled Resident Evil Requiem will launch on February 27, 2026.
