The X-Files Is Getting An Epic LEGO Set That’s Definitely For Adults, And Gillian Anderson Called It A Decade Ago

In the ’90s, The X-Files was a massive influence on pop culture, but its return for Season 11 in 2018 ended less dramatically than expected under creator Chris Carter. It appears doubtful now that the series will be revived with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. However, devoted fans are receiving a special treat: LEGO is creating an impressive build of The X-Files based on a fan vote. Even more surprising, Gillian Anderson predicted this in 2025, over a decade from the time when she made her statement!

WetWired, an enthusiast of LEGO, designed a set titled “The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There“, which emerged victorious in LEGO’s “Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback!” contest. This creation faced tough competition from other designs like the second-place entry for Jumanji, followed by the third-place Buffy the Vampire Slayer Library, fourth-place Edward Scissorhands, and fifth-place The Fifth Element Book Nook and Playset.

As a passionate X-Files fan, I was utterly thrilled to dive into this captivating LEGO rendition of the show’s universe. The design cleverly encompasses two distinct layers: the lower level faithfully recreating the iconic X-Files office setting, while the upper layer is adorned with a suspenseful UFO and an intriguing grey alien.

Characters in this set are a delight for any fan, featuring the likes of Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Assistant Director Walter Skinner, along with lesser-known figures such as the Jersey Devil, Eugene Tooms, and even the enigmatic Syndicate Leader. Interestingly, it appears that the Syndicate Leader resembles the notorious Cigarette-Smoking Man in all but name, with a conspicuous absence of his signature Morley.

Yet, if the dramatic explosion exposing the Cigarette-Smoking Man’s skull didn’t put an end to his mischief, I suppose a simple name change in this LEGO set can hardly keep him at bay!

In a genuine manner, the Easter eggs are quite charming. Hidden behind a gap in the wall, we find the enigmatic character Eugene Tooms, also known as the liver-consuming contortionist killer who first appeared in a memorable episode from Season 1. Among other items, there’s a replica of the newspaper The Lone Gunman, Mulder’s iconic “I Want To Believe” poster, and the duo’s flashlights. The Skinner figurine seems particularly grumpy, which is a fitting reference to those instances when he had cause to visit Mulder’s office.

This collection, consisting of over 2000 parts, is undeniably designed for mature builders. Many millennials nationwide may have been eagerly anticipating this set since its announcement. Although Gillian Anderson has remained vague about returning to her role as Scully following Season 11’s conclusion, she showed excitement for the winning LEGO set on X (previously known as Twitter), accompanied by a UFO emoji in her post:

We’ve arrived!!!

It’s certainly delightful to witness the ’90s star rejoicing over the show that catapulted her to stardom, yet it’s not the first time she’s shared about Mulder and Scully receiving LEGO makeover. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit a post from 2015: [Link to the 2015 post]

Isn’t it intriguing? I find it thrilling that the X-Files model won first place, and I’m curious about the average age of the voters. It seems plausible that people who aren’t experts on the ’90s could have voted for it, but I think there were probably a good number of individuals in their 30s and 40s who participated in the voting. The winners of the Grand Prize at WetWired will have their design transformed into a LEGO set, receive 1% of the total net sales, ten free copies of their set, and credit as well as a bio in the set materials, according to the challenge details.

If the latest LEGO news stirs up memories of ’90s mysteries, thrilling murder cases, and captivating conspiracies, you can now stream all eleven seasons of the classic series The X-Files with a Hulu subscription. Additionally, the two associated feature films are also available for viewing.
