Warning: This discussion contains spoilers for The Bear‘s Season 4 finale. You can watch the full series by subscribing to Hulu.
As soon as I wrapped up my marathon viewing of Season 4 of “The Bear,” which aired on the 2025 TV schedule, I was left pondering many things. Time ran out, leaving me uncertain about the restaurant’s future. But what truly shocked me was when Jeremy Allen White’s character, Carmy, informed Ayo Edebiri’s character, Sydney, that he had withdrawn his name from the partnership agreement and intended to depart.
Currently, it seems that Carmy must rediscover his passion, and perhaps abandoning restaurants could be the solution. Yet, there’s a pattern where he tends to flee from situations that he might need to confront. After observing him grapple with this decision in the finale, I find myself constantly pondering what the best option would be for him.
On The One Hand, Carmy Needs To Deal With His Baggage And Find His Spark
As I watched Season 4 of “The Bear,” I often found myself pondering Carmy’s statement about his dream for a tranquil and happy restaurant in the initial flashback. It seems that despite his best efforts, he has yet to achieve this vision. This season, amid his journey toward healing, he began to doubt whether his tireless work was truly worthwhile.
Witnessing Carmy reignite a flicker of passion at the restaurant, especially while cooking for his mother and reconnecting with Claire, filled me with great happiness. Additionally, it indicated that he was making progress in dealing with his inner struggles and finding a path to healing.
When he withdrew his name from the contract, I understood his perspective. He felt the need to step away in order to explore his own path, and he recognized the harm he had caused The Bear. Essentially, he was trying to clear a way forward for those he cares about, just as much as himself.
With this combo, enjoy all that ABC, FX, Star Wars, Marvel, and more have in store! For a monthly fee of $10.99, you’ll have access to both Disney+ and Hulu. If you prefer an ad-free experience, upgrade for $19.99 per month. Check out the deal now!
However, He Also Can’t Run Away From His Problems
After discovering Sydney’s emotional turmoil regarding her future, depicted in Episode 4 of The Bear‘s fourth season, and witnessing her internal struggle between departing or remaining, I can understand why she was upset by Carmy’s decision. He is the one who initiated this intricate tangle they find themselves in; the restaurant was his brainchild. If he were to leave, it would not only mean losing a crucial figure in their business endeavor but also a family member.
Sydney perceives this instance as yet another demonstration of him running from his troubles by undermining himself, as she cried out angrily through her tears.
I understand your situation isn’t ideal, but let me clarify that the problem isn’t about needing you. The fact is, you’re meant to be with me. However, you tend to undermine yourself and disappear when things are going well, which is unfair. So, I’m struggling to comprehend why you’re behaving this way, especially since we’re partners.
Instead of constantly fleeing from situations, perhaps it would be better for Jeremy Allen White’s character to stay with The Bear and discover a method to rekindle his affection for everything once more.
Lately, I’ve been grappling with who might be correct in this situation. On one side, Carmy makes a valid argument; if he’s lost his drive, perhaps he should seek it out. He carries personal issues that require attention, and some introspection and healing could be beneficial not just for him, but also for those around him. But from another perspective, he is the driving force behind The Bear restaurant, and notably, his family works there. If he departs, it might seem like another instance of fleeing…
When the season concluded, it was determined that the contract would bear the names of Sydney, Richie, and Nat. Carmy was to remain until the restaurant achieved stability. If Season 5 of the show transpires, I anticipate Jeremy Allen White will still be part of the cast in “The Bear”. There might be further debate about whether Carmy should continue his role in the kitchen or not.
It seems I require their input to maintain this discussion, as I’m not sure there’s a single definitive solution. Given the intricacy of the situation, I appreciate the different perspectives being shared, so let’s keep the dialogue going in hopes of further insights…
