Capcom realized that Resident Evil fans wouldn’t have wanted the original Requiem

Initially, Capcom planned for Resident Evil Requiem to be an ongoing service game, but they abandoned this concept during the development process.

For devoted enthusiasts of the long-standing pedigree survival horror series, it’s certainly comforting news. Since this particular intellectual property has always been centered around single-player, offline gameplay, altering Resident Evil’s genre was bound to be a challenging proposition.

During the initial phases of creating Requiem, it dawned on us at Capcom that we needed to make some changes. As a fellow gamer, I’d put it this way: “Back when we were shaping Requiem, we picked up on some whispers. Koshi Nakanishi, our director, shared this in a Creators’ Message video during Capcom’s June 27 Spotlight broadcast – ‘You may have caught wind of certain rumors.’

He mentioned that they explored ideas such as a web-based version of Resident Evil or an open-world adaptation. After spending some time on these experiments, they discovered that while there were some intriguing ideas, ultimately, it didn’t align with what fans desired to experience or play.

Nakanishi explained that the team had to rethink their approach, as they abandoned the concept of a live service for Resident Evil.

Resident Evil & multiplayer

It’s not impossible for Resident Evil to thrive in the online world, but so far, Capcom has attempted this transition on several occasions in the past.

Regarding RE:Verse, a game launched exclusively for multiplayer in 2022 to mark the franchise’s 25th anniversary, has announced its permanent shutdown on June 29, 2025. The peak player count on Steam was slightly over 2,000 players.

Similarly, the standalone games, Operation Raccoon City (released in 2012) and Umbrella Corps (released in 2016), which primarily focused on multiplayer gameplay, were met with unfavorable reception.

It’s uncertain if future mainline Resident Evil games will include multiplayer, but for the case of Requiem, Capcom is staying true to its familiar style.
