In the third season of Squid Game, the storyline surrounding character Player 222, also known as Jun-hee, took numerous unexpected turns, ultimately leading to a heartbreaking conclusion for both characters linked to this number. A significant plot point in Season 3 revolves around the consequences of the shocking revelation about Jun-hee’s pregnancy, which sets the stage for an unanticipated and violent twist in her character’s journey. Interestingly, promotional material for Squid Game Season 3 hinted at Jun-hee’s pregnancy being pivotal to the season finale by including the sound of a crying baby at the end of its trailer.
In appalling conditions and cruel treatment by the game administrators, it was inevitable that Player 222 would eventually perish within the lethal atmosphere of Squid Game. One might assume that Jun-hee’s child born during Squid Game Season 3, Episode 2 would spark some compassion in the Front Man and the VIPs; however, an unexpected turn of events unfolded for the characters, revealing a darker side to their lives.
In the latest installment of Netflix’s popular South Korean thriller series, Squid Game, we follow the ongoing adventures of the surviving characters following Seong Gi-hun’s unsuccessful uprising in the Season 2 finale. The returning cast from Season 2 includes Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Yim Si-wan, Wi Ha-jun, and Jo Yuri, who lead this captivating ensemble.
Does Player 222 Die In Season 3 of Squid Game?
Warning: the rest of this article contains spoilers for Squid Game Season 3.
In episode 2 of Squid Game Season 3, Jun-hee managed to deliver her child amidst the “Hide and Seek” contest. However, the game was far from harmless, resulting in a significant number of unfortunate casualties.
120 (Player Hyun-ju), also known as Park Sung-hoon, perished after being inadvertently slain by Player 333. Unfortunately, he didn’t know that she was guarding Jun-hee and the infant. Meanwhile, 007 (Player Park Yong-sik) met a tragic end at the hands of his mother, Geum-Ja (Player 149), who was driven to kill him due to his attempt on Jun-hee’s life just before they exited the game. Overwhelmed by her actions against her son, Geum-Ja eventually took her own life. It’s important to mention that at the heart of these deaths lies Player 222 and her baby.
Following the turmoil during the Hide and Seek game, the VIPs put forth a peculiar idea regarding the newborn baby: Treat her as a competitor in the upcoming games alongside Player 222 for survival. The Front Man, torn by the VIPs’ proposal, found himself compelled to consent to their demand.
In the heart-stopping sequel, the survival of both Jun-hee and her newborn hinged on their participation in the next grueling challenge – a perilous jump rope performance atop a precarious glass bridge. Given Jun-hee’s existing injuries, this was no easy feat. However, when the odds seemed insurmountable, kindred spirit Gi-hun courageously stepped up to assist by bravely carrying the baby during the high-stakes jump rope game, putting his own life on the line for their safety.
Despite Gi-hun managing to bring the baby along for another stage, Jun-hee couldn’t do so due to her injury. As Gi-hun attempted to rescue Player 222, Jun-hee understood their efforts were futile. Consequently, Player 222, realizing the baby was now under Gi-hun’s care, chose to leap and end her life, knowing the child was secure with him.
In the fourth episode of Season 3 of Squid Game, the demise of Player 222 is undeniably heartbreaking given her numerous would-be rescuers who perished during the games. However, with the baby miraculously surviving, Jun-hee’s tale remains unfinished. Meanwhile, tending to the baby has given Gi-hun a renewed sense of direction and significance in his life (particularly as they approach the final round).
What Happened to the Baby in Squid Game Season 3?
Following Jun-hee’s passing, influential figures proposed a twist in the game: substituting the baby’s mother as the replacement for Player 222, thereby making the baby the new Player 222 in the final round. This move turned the baby into an active competitor, further highlighting the ruthless and inhumane nature of the game’s VIPs.
In the latest development, it appears the Leader consented to the suggestion, yet there’s an impression that In-ho may have done so to shield and prolong the baby’s life. A past incident in Squid Game Season 3, Episode 5, where the Leader offered Gi-hun a reprieve, hinting at his affection for the newborn (although Gi-hun refused the Leader’s proposition to eliminate the other players while they were unconscious), supports this notion.
In the final stage of the competition, it was Player 333 (also known as MG Coin and the child’s biological father) and Gi-hun who were left as the only adult contestants. A pivotal point arose where Player 333 seriously contemplated murdering his own baby to secure victory in the Squid Game, but once again, Gi-hun intervened, ultimately leading to the demise of MG Coin.
In the finale of Squid Game Season 3, Gi-hun made the selfless choice to let the infant win instead, ensuring its survival and potential for a brighter future. This act also served as a powerful reminder to the Front Man and the VIPs that he retains his compassionate nature.
Though Gi-hun didn’t emerge victorious and bring an end to the games, his choice to re-enter the games ultimately served a higher purpose. This decision also seemed to have some impact on the Front Man in the end, as he was the one who arranged for the baby to be sent to Jun-ho along with the winner’s earnings.
