Preparations are underway for Round 2 of Street Fighter’s return to the big screen, and the path leading up to this event has taken some surprising turns. Switches in directors and confirmed acting roles mark key developments in the making of the forthcoming live-action film. Here’s a rundown of what we know so far about the upcoming movie.
First unveiled in April 2023, the upcoming video game adaption hails from Legendary Pictures. They’ve obtained the license to produce not only a Street Fighter film but also a TV series, all centered around the legendary fighting franchise by Capcom.
Initially, the project appeared tailor-made for Danny and Michael Philippou, as they were chosen to adapt it following their success in directing the horror film “Talk to Me” and producing a popular Street Fighter short video on their own.
However, by June 2024, the duo had to resign due to scheduling issues, instead choosing to concentrate on their new A24 movie titled Bring Her Back. Now, Kitao Sakurai of Bad Trip fame is directing, and some unexpected actors have been roped in for the cast.
Street Fighter live-action movie release date delays
Initially scheduled for a March 20, 2026 release, the live-action Street Fighter film now faces an open-ended postponement.
The news emerged following Sony’s decision to postpone the release of their upcoming film from its schedule. While they haven’t given an official explanation yet, it seems plausible that the change in directors might be the cause of the delay.
However, another possible scenario is that towards the end of 2024, the distribution agreement between Sony and Legendary Pictures expired and was not renewed. Shortly afterward, Sony removed the Street Fighter movie from their release schedule.
There seems to be some confusion about whether Sony will continue to distribute the project or if Legendary will work with another company instead. Rest assured, the project is not canceled; in fact, auditions and castings are happening as we speak.
Who’s in the cast?
By June 2025, it was announced that rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson had joined the cast of the Street Fighter film, portraying Balrog – a former boxer turned enforcer for the nefarious Shadaloo group who has fallen from grace.
The hip-hop artist is set to collaborate with Jason Momoa, portraying Blanka – a character renowned for his untamed nature, electrical abilities, and heartrending past, who is green in color and prone to ferocious assaults.
