Based on recent news, it appears that Michael Bay has plans to helm a fresh installment of the Transformers series, following two underperforming films at the box office within the franchise.
It’s hard to remember just how massive the Transformers films by Bay were. From the initial release in 2007 up until The Last Knight in 2017, these movies generated a staggering total of over $4.3 billion globally. Interestingly, the third installment, Dark of the Moon, earned an impressive $1.1 billion alone.
These films didn’t receive rave reviews (as a matter of fact, each one has ratings below 60% on Rotten Tomatoes), yet they were massive cultural phenomena and blockbusters with astronomical box office earnings.
After Bay (who’s currently involved in a Skibidi Toilet film project) vacated the director’s seat, the movies have generally received positive reviews, yet failed to generate significant profits. However, that situation might soon be reversed.
Michael Bay is coming back for a new Transformers movie
Bay is developing a new Transformers movie, according to Puck News, and he “wants to direct.”
The franchise has deteriorated in Bay’s absence, and he hasn’t achieved such blockbuster success since then, a media outlet pointed out, further mentioning that Bay has voiced frustrations over difficulties in getting his projects approved.
A year ago, Bay returned to the studio with a desire to produce and potentially direct, and it was mentioned that Jordan VanDina is working on a script for him, according to the update.
Bay’s movie is part of around five upcoming Transformers productions, and the director of the original Transformers film, Josh Cooley, is finalizing a deal to work on a live-action adaptation as well.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled that not one, but three exciting concepts related to the G.I. Joe universe are being considered and are currently in their budding stages. However, if Paramount wishes to maintain its grip on these iconic characters, it’s crucial that they bring one of these ideas to life on the big screen by 2029; otherwise, they risk forfeiting the rights.
Previously, during an interview with UNILAD, Bay was advised by Steven Spielberg to cease production on Transformers films following the release of the third installment.
Initially, I produced too many of them. Steven Spielberg advised, ‘Limit it to three.’ So, I committed to doing so. However, the studio pressured me into creating a fourth, which subsequently earned over a billion dollars,” he explained.
After that, I announced I’d be taking a break. Yet, they pleaded with me once more. In hindsight, I should have indeed halted. They were quite enjoyable to engage with.
