2025 saw MindsEye, a game developed by Build A Rocket Boy studio, earning the unwanted title of being the worst-rated game of that year. This unfortunate status is largely attributed to its subpar technical state. Upon release, it appeared that the game was not fully polished and the developers likely intended to make improvements post-launch.
Devs should be honest
Alex Hernandez, who lends his voice to both Jacob Diaz from MindsEye and Lincoln Clay in Mafia 3, expressed disapproval of this method. In a conversation with Check It TV, he openly stated that he dislikes it when game developers charge full price for products that are not yet completely finished.
He suggested, in a similar vein, that actions like these can potentially damage rather than enhance the studio’s standing. As an illustration, he highlighted Cyberpunk 2077 (other than MindsEye), recalling the technical debacle of its 2020 launch, particularly on PS4 and XBox One consoles.
It seems to me, from a consumer point of view, many people would agree: It appears unwise and potentially damaging to one’s reputation to launch a product that’s not fully polished yet, and still ask for full price.
As a gamer myself, I firmly believe that game studios should always be upfront with their players. Instead of hiding imperfections, it’s fairer to acknowledge when a game isn’t fully complete and release it as a beta version. This way, we all know what we’re getting into, and the developers can make promised improvements post-launch.
The tricky part here is the price. If a game isn’t finished, it shouldn’t cost as much as a polished product. A lower price tag would make this approach more acceptable for developers, taking the sting out of releasing an incomplete game.
I, as a consumer, would rather be told up front, because then I know what I’m signing up for.
It appears that the poor launch of “Build A Rocket Boy” is causing significant trouble for the studio. Reports indicate that they are planning a large-scale reduction in workforce, potentially impacting more than 100 staff members.
