Without a doubt, the news is confirmed: Denis Villeneuve will be helming the upcoming James Bond film produced by Amazon and MGM. This talented director, known for his work on Dune, has long been an admirer of the Bond franchise, boasting a personal preference among its stories.
Approximately four years have passed since Daniel Craig played his final James Bond role in the movie “No Time to Die.” Interestingly, he did indeed step down from the role.
Ever since then, it seems as though those responsible for creating the Bond films have been taking their sweet time figuring out their next move. The guardians of the series, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, have now handed over creative control to Amazon, signaling the end of a massive cinematic era and the start of a fresh new one.
Director Denis Villeneuve has been chosen to helm the reboot of the franchise. Tanya Lapointe from Dune serves as executive producer alongside David Heyman and Amy Pascal in this venture. The release date, cast members, and specific Ian Fleming story (if any) they plan to adapt remain undecided at this point. However, we do have an idea of the kind of Bond movie Villeneuve prefers.
Denis Villeneuve names his favorite Bond movie
Director Villeneuve prefers the 2006 James Bond film, Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig, over the 1967 comedic version played by David Niven.
As a devoted Bond fan, I can’t help but admit that nothing lifts my spirits quite like a classic James Bond movie. (2021 interview with Ali Plumb)
Later on, he was questioned about any specific Bond film he prefers when he’s in the mood for watching. In response, he mentioned that Casino Royale, the initial film featuring Daniel Craig, remains among his top favorites ever since it first came out.
As a fellow enthusiast, I can say that Skyfall has been a go-to for me during challenging times. I’ve revisited these films numerous times.
It’s important to note that Villeneuve acknowledges the entire range of Bond, spanning from Sean Connery up to George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan.
Reminiscing about my childhood cinema experiences, I recall they often revolved around 007. From a young age, I watched James Bond movies alongside my father, starting with ‘Dr. No’ and Sean Connery,” he shared following Amazon’s announcement.
As an ardent James Bond enthusiast, his world feels sacred to me. I aim to preserve the essence and pave the way for future adventures. This undertaking is both daunting and exhilarating, a significant honor indeed. Amy, David, and myself are beyond thrilled to resurrect him on the silver screen. A big thank you goes out to Amazon MGM Studios for their faith in us.
In the meantime, find out why Aaron Pierre would be the perfect choice to play the next Bond.
