Currently, residing in a store is quite the trend. Following the doctor’s secret mall apartment saga (aptly named “Secret Mall Apartment” as expected), we now have “Roofman“. This film, inspired by real events, features Channing Tatum as an ex-convict who takes a leaf out of “The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” and decides to hide in a Toys-R-Us after his escape from prison. Through the store’s surveillance cameras, he develops feelings for Kirsten Dunst. Given the circumstances, who wouldn’t? In line with many heartwarming con artist stories, Tatum’s character, Roofman, grapples between a life of crime (and staying hidden) and love (with all its risks associated with being caught in public). The movie is written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, the mind behind “Blue Valentine“. The supporting cast includes Peter Dinklage, Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, and Jimmy O. Yang. Here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about “Roofman“.
Based on a True Story
Indeed, a character known as Roofman did exist. In reality, he was none other than Jeffrey Manchester who spent half a year residing within both Toys R Us and Circuit City stores. Similar to the film, Manchester drew attention by donating ill-gotten goods to a Christmas toy drive in an attempt to impress his love interest, which unfortunately was not entirely genuine. As reported by SF Gate, Manchester had a military background and earned his nickname Roofman due to his method of breaking into McDonald’s restaurants through the rooftops for robberies. It is worth noting that Manchester is currently incarcerated in the Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving time for his final grand heist.
Peter Dinklage steals the trailer, arrest him!

The trailer offers a glimpse into some of the main characters, such as Peter Dinklage portraying Dunst’s difficult supervisor and Lakeith Stanfield playing a criminal associate of Tatum. Furthermore, the use of “Running Down a Dream” adds an authentic southern swamp-crime ambiance to the film set in Charlotte, NC.
When does Roofman come out?
You can raise the Roofman on October 10.
