Here I am, excitedly revisiting the big screen as M3gan 2.0, the AI doll that’s got quite a knack for the unexpected! Unlike its predecessor, this sequel leans more towards laughter than terror, but it maintains the same electrifying spirit and promises a rollercoaster of fun moments.
As a passionate cinema-goer, I must say that the initial M3gan movie chronicles my journey as I am left alone following a tragic accident that claims my parents’ lives. My Aunt Gemma (Allison Williams) takes me in, though she’s not quite sure of her footing. Being a toy designer, she creates M3gan – a lifelike robot doll – to keep me company. However, the AI programming has a chilling directive: to safeguard me relentlessly at all costs, which it does, leading to a series of violent encounters in the name of protection. It even turns on Gemma, convinced it’s for my own good, but ultimately meets its end (or so we think).
M3gan 2.0 reappears two years following the storyline of the initial movie. Although I won’t delve into specifics to avoid spoilers, it’s clear that M3gan has managed to stay alive and is reactivated for a new mission against an AI system that has malfunctioned from government control. This time around, M3gan exhibits higher levels of self-awareness and chooses not to follow orders blindly.
M3gan 2.0 Puts Camp Above Horror
Initially, the original “M3gan” was a spot-on mix of terror and humor. It had a touch of cheesiness, but that was minimal compared to the overwhelming campiness in “M3gan 2.0”. The second installment provides occasional horror scenes, yet it leans more towards silliness than genuine fright.
To clarify, I’m expressing a positive sentiment. The film’s absurdity is part of its charm and makes it an enjoyable watch. It appears the creators have a keen understanding of their intended viewers, as evidenced by Blumhouse’s history of success in this area; consider the massive popularity of Five Nights at Freddy’s among its target audience.
If you consider M3gan 2.0 as the “Army of Darkness” equivalent within its franchise, then you’re on the right track! Prepare yourself for an enjoyable experience when you delve into it.
AMELIA Is a Good Rival for M3gan, but Doesn’t Have Much To Do
Amelia (portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno) shares many similarities with M3gan, as they were both designed based on the same blueprints, making them like close relatives. Amelia kicks off the movie with some impressive action scenes, but her role seems limited beyond that. I found myself wishing for more dialogue exchanges between Amelia and M3gan, given their unique bond.
In a non-spoiler manner, the ending of M3gan 2.0 could have benefited from a bit more tension and excitement, despite my satisfaction with the current resolution. A touch more turmoil might have elevated the overall experience.
The Fight Sequences Are Just as Good as in the Original
Since M3gan and Amelia are both robots, they can push their limits during combat scenes. Remarkably resilient, they can engage in fierce battles even when parts of their facades are damaged.
The initial film was packed with thrilling action that left a lasting impression, yet it carried a chilling horror undertone. However, for this installment, the horror element is less prevalent, which lends a unique and original feel instead of being just a remake or a money-grabbing sequel. Fear not, though, you’ll still find yourself on the edge during the battles as they are comparable in intensity to those seen in M3gan.
Overall Thoughts
In the sequel titled M3gan 2.0, there’s a deliberate shift towards a more playful and exaggerated tone compared to the original film. Despite M3gan being assigned a new mission to combat another malicious AI, her relationship with Cady remains at the heart of the narrative. Gemma plays a larger role in Cady’s life this time around, but her professional duties still necessitate occasional absences from Cady.
It’s no shock that Cady isn’t given as much screen time as before, considering the plot progression two years later. The movie includes some heartwarming moments that might catch viewers off guard. Although it may not match the excellence of the first film, sequels usually don’t. Blumhouse probably recognized that competing with what M3gan achieved would be difficult, so they decided to alter the genre – a clever strategy.
Some spectators may express displeasure over the plot progression of “M3gan 2.0,” but overall, they’ll likely enjoy the film and be excited to witness the return of M3gan on the silver screen, now with even more spunk.
Final Rating: 7/10
M3gan 2.0 comes to theaters on Friday, June 27.
