Three fundamental shapes – circles, triangles, and squares – play a crucial role in the universe portrayed in Squid Game. They influence its visual appeal, govern its rules, and are central to the story’s origin as conceived by the show’s creator.
These symbols can be found throughout Squid Game: they’re present on the Dalgona candies, the reverse sides of the cards distributed by the Salesman, on the guards’ facial masks, and they’re also the figures employed for playing the main game at a playground.
In his press conference at TopMob, Hwang Dong-hyuk shared that the initial forms he envisioned for his idea were reminiscent of simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares that one would draw on the ground. This is because, in his mind, he was essentially recalling his childhood self while conceptualizing the project.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been privileged to follow Hwang’s journey in crafting Netflix’s most monumental series to date. In anticipation of Season 3, he unraveled the profound symbolism hidden within the shapes that form the heart of the show.
Squid Game creator says shapes represent “limitless competition”
Hwang stated that these three forms symbolize the endless rivalry characteristic of contemporary capitalism.” or
“According to Hwang, these three figures stand for the relentless competition found in modern capitalism.
In our production, we employ these basic geometric figures to portray the various social classes within the elite guards. I believe that over time, these seemingly straightforward forms have evolved into symbols representative of our show and even resonating with some contemporary societal concerns.
To be honest, it’s rather unusual, but there’s something about it that captivates me strongly. Initially, when I stumbled upon those forms, I found it quite an unusual and intriguing find. Consequently, I’ve developed a liking for it.
The highly anticipated third season of our main series, speculated to be its final one as several spin-offs are rumored, is predicted to be the bloodiest and darkest installment thus far.
Large unanswered questions linger: Will Gi-hun manage to survive, can the Squid Game organizer find redemption, and will Hwang Jun-ho encounter his brother once more?
In the process of penning Season 3, I found myself at a significant crossroads… as it represented the culmination of the entire series, according to Hwang.
Making that choice was quite a challenge for me. I’m still pondering if it was the right one… Time will tell, as I don’t want to give anything away.
He was also asked to describe the finale in three words: “Crazy… insane… nuts!”
