In just a few days, on June 26th, Techland will offer a stunning enhancement for free, transforming the appearance of Dying Light across all platforms. The developers have drawn upon their expertise and contemporary technology to elevate exploring Harran to an unprecedented visual experience. Tymon Smektala, director of the series, disclosed that this transformation is the culmination of painstakingly detailed work.
Over the last few years, we’ve been increasing our resources significantly, tailoring them to suit our needs, and figuring out ways to maximize the potential of the technology at hand. One day, someone decided to implement these discoveries on some existing assets, and it dawned on us that this approach could be applied across the entire game – as explained by Technical Director Grzegorz Swistowski.
To breathe fresh life into “Dying Light“, a significant amount of hands-on labor was necessary. This effort allowed us to upgrade the textures and lighting, thereby amplifying the authenticity of the game world. Despite the challenges presented by decade-old technology, we’ve made it happen. Techland has successfully expanded the maximum detail display range from 260% to 340%, a feature that players can customize in the game settings.
Grzegorz Swistowski mentioned that he thoroughly explored the whole map in search of areas that needed enhancement, and each modification had to be done meticulously by hand by our artists.
In this updated version of “Dying Light”, titled “Retouched Update”, it’s set to drop simultaneously across platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The extent of these changes will be determined by the hardware you own. Additionally, a revamped soundtrack, crafted by the original composer Pawel Blaszczak, will be incorporated into the game following the update.
Thanks to the “Retouched Update” released on June 26, Techland offers fans of the series a great reason to revisit the first installment. It’s important to remember the story of the protagonist, Kyle Crane, before the upcoming spin-off game featuring him, Dying Light: The Beast, which will be available on August 22nd this year for PC and both 8th and 9th generation consoles.
