Fan-Made Halo Game Gets Xbox’s Blessing, But Microsoft Had One Request

Unofficial video games modeled after well-known series often face the possibility of being halted by the original copyright holders. However, this isn’t the case with Spartan Survivors as it continues to operate.

The homegrown Halo game, where players engage in battles against waves of Covenant and Flood enemies as Master Chief or the Arbiter, has earned Microsoft’s endorsement. The developers shared that Microsoft expressed admiration for their dedication, stating they were “thrilled to see the team’s enthusiasm.” It appears that individuals from Microsoft have also tried out the game. The Halo representative expressed excitement, saying, “It’s truly enjoyable, and we can’t wait to progress further in our playthrough and uncover more features.

Microsoft, interestingly, made a particular demand to the developers. It appears that Microsoft requested the inclusion of text within the legal disclaimers in the game’s credits and on marketplace pages, aiming to clearly state that the project is neither an official Halo game nor a collaboration with Halo Studios.

In the upcoming version of Spartan Survivors, we’d like to express our gratitude to Halo Studios and Microsoft for their genuine support towards us, stated the studio.

Today, you have an opportunity to download Spartan Survivors for free on itch.io. As per its store page, this game is slated for release on Xbox and Steam in 2025, though the specific date remains uncertain at this time. However, the announcement trailer previously mentioned a 2024 release date, which appears to be outdated.

Microsoft is progressing with fresh Halo games, currently being developed at the recently renamed Halo Studios and powered by Unreal Engine 5. There’s speculation about a significant Halo launch slated for 2026 to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary, but specific details have yet to be disclosed.
