Dying Light Gets A “Retouched” Update Soon With All These Improvements, But It’s Not A Remaster

Over a ten-year span since Dying Light was initially released in 2015, its creators, Techland, are re-exploring the zombie game with an extensive upgrade, focusing on improving the graphics and various aspects of the game – however, they prefer not to label it as a remaster.

The “Retouched” update is set to release on June 26th. This update aims to extract even more potential from Dying Light, as stated by the studio. It’s important to note that it’s not a full makeover or remaster, but rather an innovative approach to get more out of the existing technology.

One fateful day, I stumbled upon an idea: leveraging my accumulated knowledge on certain assets within our game. It dawned on me that this approach could be applied universally across our entire game. This insight was shared by Technical Game Director Grzegorz Świstowski.

With the Retouched update, players will notice improved texture clarity and enhanced upscaling of textures, making them appear more defined and visually appealing.

Moreover, the “detailed range” in Dying Light’s view distance has been enhanced from 260% to 340% in the game’s settings. The studio is also incorporating a new “8K Ultra shadow quality” and advanced lighting for various surfaces. Previously flat-looking surfaces should now exhibit more depth and texture.

Techland stated that composer Paweł Blaszczak returned to provide a full remaster of the soundtrack, offering it with a distinctive new touch.

Techland noted their commitment to authenticity, stating, “He actually went as far as re-creating that vintage cassette sound by recording directly onto tape! Such dedication is impressive. It’s genuine, nostalgic, and simply superb.” They further mentioned that the Retouched update will include fresh tracks and atmospheric sounds. Moreover, they’ve boosted the audio in combat for a more intense experience.

The developer mentioned that each swipe, each crunch, each zombie defeat will resonate more powerfully, more intensely. You’ll truly sense those impacts, he added.

The initially suggested Retouched update, which was mentioned back in January, has taken longer to materialize due to the meticulous, hands-on work involved.

3D artist Krzysztof Knefel stated, “In essence, I traversed the entire layout, seeking opportunities to enhance features. Every single one of these aspects required personal, hands-on modifications by our artistic team.

1. With the Retouched update, players won’t need to purchase new PC hardware, as Techland chose to maintain the system requirements.

2. The Retouched update can be played on both PS4 and Xbox One, which necessitated extensive testing by Techland to prevent running out of memory on these older consoles.

The “Improved Patch” goes live on June 26, and best of all, it’s completely free for all platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Although Techland hinted at enhancements across all systems with the Retouched update, they didn’t provide details about the extent of changes per platform.

As a passionate gamer, I was all set to dive into the futuristic world of Cyberpunk 2077 on June 26, eagerly awaiting the arrival of update 2.3 from CD Projekt Red. However, it seems that fate has other plans as the release has been postponed. Nevertheless, I’m still excited about the upcoming update and can’t wait to see what Techland and CD Projekt Red have in store for us gamers. Now, instead of having to decide which game to play first on June 26, I get a little more time to enjoy both!

2022 saw the release of Dying Light 2 as a sequel to Dying Light. Coming up next in the series is Dying Light: The Beast, set to launch on both consoles and PCs in August.
