Zoo goes into lockdown as bears break out and eat “weeks worth” of honey

In the UK, a call was made to the authorities, and guests had to leave following an incident where two bears managed to break free from their habitat at a local wildlife reserve.

On Tuesday, June 24th, BBC shared news about an incident at Wildwood Devon park where the European brown bears, Mish and Lucy, managed to break free from their compounds.

At approximately 3 PM British Summer Time, an event transpired, and the park swiftly took measures to secure the well-being of its guests. Sixteen individuals – some being children – found themselves confined within a play area, as free-roaming bears were present.

As reported by park authorities at Wildwood Devon, it appears that the bears managed to find and consume an entire week’s supply of the sweet delicacy they had been craving.

Wildwood Devon park responds

According to a statement from Mark Habben, the head of zoological operations at the park, no one there was in any danger.

I excitedly reported that “Not only was I overjoyed, but both the bears appeared to be equally jubilant.” The team remained composed and collected throughout, mirroring the relaxed demeanor of the bears at all times. Rest assured, the public was never in danger as emergency protocols were swiftly executed with precision, ensuring everyone performed their assigned roles effectively.

As reported by Habben, the bears managed to break free from their enclosure and ventured towards a neighboring staff region. The authorities were summoned to assist the wildlife park’s personnel, yet the bears maintained a tranquil demeanor throughout and opted to remain confined within their bear residence.

In time, Mish returned alone to the confines of the enclosure, while Lucy was enticed back with a bell and her preferred meals.

It’s not the first time an animal escape has become a popular topic online. In fact, back in June 2024, a thrilling incident occurred at Cedar Point amusement park when two camels managed to break free from their enclosure at the neighboring petting zoo, causing visitors to flee in panic.
