Alfred Hitchcock was a role model for Steven Spielberg, whom the filmmaker had hoped to meet and converse with in the past. Bruce Dern, who shared this information about Spielberg during his visit on the set of “Family Plot“, aimed to facilitate this encounter. However, Dern’s attempts were unsuccessful as Hitchcock promptly declined the idea of meeting him.
In my gaming world, I came across a scenario that Bruce Dern once recounted in his book, titled “Things I’ve Said, Yet Maybe I Shouldn’t Have.” He shared this tale through Far Out Magazine.
In his book, Dern expressed that he had mentioned, ‘You’re his hero. He yearns to spend just five minutes in your company, chatting with you,’ but Hitchcock refused this idea without a second thought. Desiring to bring these two remarkable minds together, Dern’s proposal was met with absolute indifference by Hitchcock.
Hitchcock, who famously referred to Spielberg as “the director of the shark movie,” or more specifically “Jaws,” also avoided conversing with him. However, the reason behind this is quite unexpected – Hitchcock himself admitted that he would have felt like a “prostitute” in his presence, which might seem peculiar and hard to understand considering Hitchcock’s history of successful filmmaking.
As a gamer, I’ve always wondered if that’s the guy who created the captivating fish film. Yet, it’s never been easy for me to engage in conversation with him. Whenever I see him, I find myself feeling incredibly out of place, like I don’t belong in the same room as his talent and creativity.
It seems that Hitchcock’s sentiments weren’t spontaneous and were actually rooted in an opportunity presented to him – Universal Studios offered him a million dollars to contribute his voice to the Jaws theme park attraction. Remarkably, he agreed to this offer. However, he felt uneasy at the prospect of encountering Spielberg, whose success had earned him such a substantial sum merely by providing his voice.
I picked it up and used it. Yet here I am, acting awkward around the guy from the fishing film. I couldn’t even manage a friendly handshake.
This version maintains the original meaning while avoiding offensive language and making it easier to read for general audiences.
This rejection occurred due to Alfred Hitchcock declining to engage with Steven Spielberg, who eagerly sought a meeting with his admired role model.
