Street Fighter Movie Finds Its Chun-Li

In the upcoming remake of “Street Fighter,” the renowned character Chun-Li, who has been a fan favorite since her debut, will be played by actress Callina Liang. Previously, Ming-Na Wen portrayed Chun-Li in the 1994 version and Kristin Kreuk did so in 2009’s “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Now, it looks like a newcomer, Callina Liang, will step into the role for a fresh take on this iconic character.

According to Deadline, Liang has thus far taken on just three significant roles. She starred in the lead role for Steven Soderbergh’s 2024 supernatural thriller Presence, and also made appearances in the Thai movie Bad Genius and the British teen series Tell Me Everything.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Director Kitao Sakurai has taken the helm of this project, joining us in February. He’s been methodically assembling an impressive cast, with the likes of Jason Momoa, WWE wrestler Roman Reigns, Noah Centineo, Orville Peck, and Andrew Koji on board so far. While the games are all about high-profile fighting tournaments, I remember the 1994 movie, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raul Julia, veered more towards the realm of G.I. Joe than Street Fighter – a departure from the original storyline that left many fans like me longing for something truer to the games.

Sony has taken Street Fighter out of its 2026 launch schedule, but it’s anticipated to debut sometime in the following year. For now, fans can enjoy the American Street Fighter 2 animated series on Blu-ray, which was released for the first time last month. Capcom is also planning additional characters for their latest Street Fighter 6 game, with Sagat, C. Viper, Ingrid, and Alex joining the roster next year. Meanwhile, another fighting game movie, Mortal Kombat 2, is set to premiere later in 2023.
