The space epic Star Wars Battlefront 2 is scaling even greater heights on Steam, having yet again surpassed its simultaneous player record.
On June 23rd, a record high of 35,892 players were simultaneously playing Battlefront 2, as reported by SteamDB. This surge in player count can be attributed to several factors, one being that the game is currently discounted to $4 and is among the top-selling games on Steam. Additionally, it’s available on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. However, it’s worth noting that Battlefront 2 does not support cross-play between different platforms.
Since early May, Star Wars Battlefront 2 has been steadily moving up Steam’s popular games list, rising from its typical player count of about 1,000-1,500 in April to over 5,000 concurrent players and more. In late May, Battlefront 2 set a new record for concurrent players on Valve’s platform and later reached nearly 19,000. However, the player count dropped below 10,000 in the following weeks before soaring again in recent days to even greater numbers.
The reason for the sudden resurgence of interest in Battlefront 2, eight years after its release, is still under discussion, but it seems to have started when Andor season 2 ended on Disney+. This series predominantly explores the formation of the Rebel Alliance and their conflict with the Empire leading up to Rogue One and A New Hope. Notably, Andor features Yavin 4 as a significant Rebel base – a well-known Star Wars setting that also serves as a playable map in Battlefront 2.
Following the recent surge of enthusiasm for the Star Wars shooter, actors like Muhannad Ben Amor from Andor and players have been urging Electronic Arts (EA) to develop a new installment, Star Wars Battlefront 3. Regrettably, fans may not be seeing Battlefront 3 in the near future, as a former producer who worked on Battlefront 2 stated that it would be difficult to reunite the original development team, since they are now scattered across various locations.
Previously, news circulated that despite the two modern Battlefront games selling over 33 million copies collectively, there were reports suggesting that EA turned down a proposal for Battlefront 3 due to licensing expenses. Interestingly enough, it seems DICE and several other EA studios are now engrossed in developing Battlefield 6, as fans like myself eagerly anticipate its release.
Although it’s not Battlefront 3, Electronic Arts (EA) is indeed releasing a new Star Wars game titled “Star Wars: Zero Company”. This exciting announcement was made at Star Wars Celebration Japan. The game is a strategic, turn-based tactics title that takes place during the Clone Wars and is being developed by creators who have previously worked on the highly praised XCOM series. Star Wars: Zero Company is slated for release in 2026.
