At one point, Midway was highly acclaimed, and their games were extremely successful. However, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, although it wasn’t one of their biggest hits, was well-liked by players and critics alike, resonating with its audience enough that many still remember it fondly with nostalgia. Let’s revisit this game to see if there are any aspects worth reminiscing about.
Shooter with a “twist”
Initially, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy seemed like just another run-of-the-mill shooter game available back then. From a third-person viewpoint, we guided a powerfully armed and muscular character through different stages, taking down countless enemies. However, what set this game apart was its unique premise.
In this version, stealth features were incorporated into the game. While these additions didn’t put Psi-Ops on par with Splinter Cell in terms of competition, the ability to sneak up on opponents and surprise attack them added a new layer of gameplay. This was particularly noticeable during the initial missions, as the protagonist’s combat capabilities hadn’t been fully revealed at that point, and our options for handling enemies were somewhat constrained.
In the upcoming discussion, we’ll delve into the character of Nick, who was armed with various weapons for combat. Among these were a pistol equipped with a silencer for stealthy use, as well as a shotgun, a sniper rifle, an assault rifle, and a machine gun, all readily available to him.

Psi powers
The unique factor that set Psi-Ops apart from other third-person shooter games was the psychic powers that the protagonist, Nick, could develop and harness over time.
Of all the abilities possessed by the main character, telekinesis stood out the most. This power allowed him to pick up and toss objects at foes, as well as lift adversaries and hurl them towards others. Furthermore, telekinesis was useful in solving environmental puzzles that sometimes obstructed our progress, requiring us to rearrange objects into structures so we could access otherwise unreachable locations.
Among his notable skills, it’s worth mentioning that telekinesis was not the only one Nick possessed. He also had the ability to siphon energy from adversaries, which could give him control over them, possess a form of remote vision that allowed him to leave his physical body and survey the nearby surroundings, perceive auras, and finally, manipulate fire through pyrokinesis.
Over time, our powers made our usual opponents barely pose a challenge for us. However, we still frequently encountered bosses who were equally endowed with psychic abilities, and regular enemies who proved tough to outsmart due to their resistance to our tactics.
The game had 8 missions, which took about 12-14 hours to complete (according to HowLongToBeat).

2004 and 2005 saw a shift in perspective about the significance of storylines in action games. That’s when I found myself immersed in the gripping narrative of Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, a game where I took on the role of Nick Scryer, an agent with psi powers. Despite my mission to infiltrate The Movement taking a turn for the worse and me getting caught, the creators had planned for such eventualities. Before stepping into action, I underwent a memory wipe procedure, ensuring that no past failures would hinder my future success.
Throughout the game, I found myself journeying alongside Nick, offering support as he grappled with his trials, aiming to restore his lost memories and consequently, the powers that were rightfully his. Simultaneously, we worked tirelessly to foil the terrorists’ malicious schemes. Sara Blake, a supposed colleague of Scryer, was by his side during this adventure.
Problematic development
Back in 2004, I got my hands on the intriguing game titled “Psi-Ops” for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. A year later, PC gamers like myself also had the chance to experience it. To put it simply,
However, the positive reviews didn’t translate into strong sales figures, making it a commercial flop. Sadly, this meant that the much-anticipated sequel, which was already in the works at Midway Games, never saw the light of day.
Unique competition with Second Sight
It’s intriguing to note that during the same period when Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy was under production, another game focusing on psi powers, called Second Sight, was simultaneously being developed by Free Radical Design, a studio renowned for the TimeSplitters series. Released on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in September 2004 and February 2005 for PC, players could indulge in supernatural powers with two thematically similar games. Despite this, it’s worth mentioning that Second Sight didn’t receive as favorable reviews compared to the game mentioned here, scoring an average of 73-77 out of 100 on Metacritic (depending on the platform).
How to play Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy today?
Currently, as I type this out, I can’t seem to find “Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy” on Steam, GOG.com, or any of the console stores like Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. Even in 2008, a free version with ads popped up, but it’s vanished without a single clue since then. It’s quite intriguing!
Concerning the disc version, you can grab the PC edition for approximately $2-$4. On the other hand, the Xbox and PlayStation 2 releases are priced at about $15 each.

It’s possible that the similarities between Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Control from Remedy Entertainment might seem a bit overstated, but they do share some notable elements. Both games have a somewhat futuristic atmosphere and our protagonists can engage in shooting, use telekinesis, and influence minds. However, it’s important to note that when it comes to production quality, Control significantly outperforms Psi-Ops.
